Gen. Schwarzkopf is very upset that a rash of calls allegedly coming from the DNC are using his name and saying that he supports Kerry. He has issued a statement that he does NOT back Kerry and that his support is with President Bush.

TAMPA, FL Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf today issued the following statement:
"The Democratic National Committee is making fraudulent phone calls claiming that I have endorsed Senator Kerry. Nothing could be further from the truth, and I demand that they stop immediately.

"Senator Kerry opposed the Reagan defense build-up that won the Cold War. Senator Kerry opposed the removal of Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. Senator Kerry proposed billions in intelligence cuts after the first attack on the World Trade Center. Senator Kerry voted against funds to equip our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with supplies like body armor and ammunition.

"I am supporting President Bush for reelection, because he is the candidate who has demonstrated the conviction needed to defeat terrorism. In contrast to the President's steadfast determination to defeat our enemies, Senator Kerry has a record of weakness that gives me no confidence in his ability to fight and win the War on Terror. His attempt to make up for these deficiencies by falsifying my endorsement only confirms my impression that he is not the man we need to lead our nation."

Both sides pull dirty tricks during an election but I wonder how many 11th hour corrections like this we will have. Have any of you gotten these calls? Do you think the DNC will actually STOP the calls or do you think they will continue to use them for the rest of the night?

Where is there any evidence that such calls have occured, and that Schwarzkopf's name is not just being used fraudulently in this piece itself?

- yeah shame there's so little time to check the truth or accuracy of these claims out now, huh?

Apparently they left messages on answering machines and the recording said it was paid for by the DNC.

TRENTON, N.J. - Lifelong Republican Richard Bonnet pays attention to politics, so when he found a message on his answering machine from Norman Schwarzkopf saying he was voting for John Kerry this year, he was momentarily stunned.

The taped phone call ends with a voice saying the ad was paid for by the DNC. Calls to the DNC office in Washington were not immediately returned.

The taped message begins with a man identifying himself as Schwarzkopf.

"In 2000, I voted for George W. Bush, but this year I'm voting for John Kerry." The man goes on to say that Bush took his eye off the ball when it came to finding the people responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, which killed nearly 700 New Jersey residents.

"John Kerry has a real plan to make our military stronger and to go after terrorists wherever they hide," the man says on the tape. "We need a vote for change, a vote for John Kerry."

This story just doesn't read right.

I would say it's not dirty politics on the side you believe, but either misreporting or someone else's dirty politics. The net effect is to try to build a Schwarzkopf endorsement alongside Britney Spears as if they mattered.

This is not a DNC scam at all, but what a stupid scam it is. When the perpetrators are busted, I hope they are busted good.

So let me guess. The DNC is 100% innocent and this is the work of Rove?

If there was a message left on someone's machine the evidence is there and it would be very easy to trace where it came from. I'm sure others who received this sort of call and then heard the General speak out about it being bogus will step forward.

This is a dirty election. Neither side is innocent and think back ... Kerry certainly has not run the type of election he said that he would in his DNC acceptance speech.

Yes. That should have been done before any media publication or any rubbish statement from Schwarzkopf about how upset he is. This story is codswallop.

Anyone else who climbs on the bandwagon of believing this story and the source of the phone calls to be true (that is, notwithstanding the word "allegedly" as a furtive disclaimer) has a few screws loose.

OMG, this is too funny. Kerry is the biggest jumper on bandwagons that I have ever seen! He takes a story that hasn't been investigated and runs with it with all his might!

I don't know if this story is true or not but give me a break, it's POSSIBLE that the DNC did it and it's possible that the Republicans are behind it. Either way, to flat out deny it and attempt to make the DNC out to be a bunch of angels that would never stoop to such a level is just too funny for words!!!!
