Naw.......

If the Sun or Mother Earth wants to do a shutdown, I'm all for it. I think "we" as a species, need to do some soul searching. The Internet might be a great place, but many don't understand how they can get lost in it. MHO.

I disagree.
Without the net, alot of the things now comming to light would most likely remain hidden. Humanity would be subjected to being spoonfed only what the media wants us to know and believe. The net is an excellent resource for knowledge. Who wouldn't want to get lost in a sea of knowledge? Whatever you ever wanted to learn or know about is just a click away.

I have got to ask you.
Is your life better because of the net or did you know life before the net.

We survived just great as a species, before the internet. It has many advantages and disadvantages. Their are pros and cons to the Internet. The biggest Con I can think of is the Internet has made us dependent on information, at just a click away. Libraries, Books, are a thing of the past. Good old fashion learning, is being circumvented by the "one click". I believe having too many conveniences makes us lazy, as a species. Seriously, how many people do you know, could make a loaf of bread from scratch? How many would look up that information on the internet? Relying on modern technologies is good, but I believe people need to seriously understand it could end tomorrow if Mother Nature, or the Sun chooses to end it. People need to be prepared for anything, and NOT take it for granted. MHO

I think you guys do not understand perversion. That is your basic argument. The internet, like your thoughts, is only bad if you let it pervert your mind. Snip bad thoughts in the bud, and you're okay.

What bothers you guys so much about the net?

Nothing.

What does bother me is humanity relies on it, and for some, wont be able to function without it.

Just because I remember before the internet.
Reason enough.There is no perversion.
It's about time ,it's about a time were you were not tethered to something other than a schedule.

My wife fusses at me all the time about me leaving my 4s iphone behind when I go run an errand.

I tell her,did I have one 20 years ago when I met you,and did I not come back?

Sometimes too much information can consume your life and prevents you from living it.

So your argument is life aint life unless you're getting dirty? Or do you mean, the internet takes a bit of the humanity out of humanity, by allowing them socially interact in a new way? Or is it both?

The way I see it, you can have your cake and eat it too, as long as you do not let yourself get perverted. I don't see a problem with making friends on the net instead of in person. It's a lot easier to find like minded people, thus allowing you to live a more enjoyable life - if that's what you enjoy.

Is there some deeper level of fear that you guys have? Something besides, "I'm tired of the net cause my friends wont come out and play?"

I think you could probably find someone on the net who likes to play in the garden or go on hikes or whatever it is that you want to do in nature. That's the beauty of the net. You can find people with common interests, and like minds, very easily.
edit on 3/19/2013 by Bleeeeep because: removed extra have from "you have guys have"

There is plan B right there.

Those of us who navigated through life before cell phones and the internet will probably cope quite nicely.
Thrive even.

What kind of question is that? Of course I knew life before the internet. I'm not totally consumed by it. Are you disagreeing that it's a valuable informative tool?

What difference does it make if the info is just a click away? In case you didn't know, books can be downloaded and read on the Web. Don't see how you can find a downside to that.

Here's how to make your bread.
m.wikihow.com...

Sure having the net shut down would pose a serious inconvenience but it's not like the lost art of going to the library or bookstore is totally forgotten. Certain info can also be taken and stored/printed out.

A peer to peer network with a combination of Omnidirectional , Semi-directional, or Highly-directional antennas should do the trick for plan b.

As for surviving without the internet: I don't think most people (on ATS, any ways) are really are concern about living without the internet. I think the concern is living without the ability to hear different point of views from individual sources versus solely corporate controlled entities. Do we have any laws that enables the gov't to shutdown traditional news sources: tv, paper press, and radio to be shut down by the gov't? What about ham radio and other forms of bi-directional communications?

My sister & I had talked about how we could communicate if something serious happened.
Especially in an EMP type of scenario, or if martial law was put into place.

She lives 15 miles west of me in the next town, one of our daughters 15 miles south.
Most of the rest of the family is closer, but a couple are 2-3 hours away.

But if travel was restricted, even a few miles would be too far.
If there had been no damage, ham radios could help.
But I only know of 2 in the whole county. Are there still CB's?
You'd still be faced with communicating from them to other people.
Long range walkie-talkies were thought about,
but none of those things are usable in an EMP situation either.

Then we thought of homing/ carrier pigeons! Perfect!!!
Everyone would have to be on board with it in order to send & receive messages though!
As you would have to have a few of each other's pigeons to get them to fly 'home'!

en.wikipedia.org...

It seemed like a good idea until we happened to think....
We live in a rural area with lots of hunters!
Yeah, if SHTF & food was scarce,
our poor little pigeons would probably never make it home!!!

Back to the drawing board!!!

That is what I have been doing for years, anything I like or think I will need I store it or print it for later.

I would LOVE for the internet to go down soon at this point.

The only reason I have it is that I advertised free wireless for my tenant.

I LOVED life before the net, it was friggin awesome!

I feel like I got what I needed, and now I want to let it go.

It is an addiction we ALL share to some degree..... i would love to go down the block or out for lunch or to the beach with people who arent looking at their phones the whole time.

Soak in the sun and the scenery again.

I feel like an alien just because I have a landline and no cell phone.

I feel this pressure like I am inconvienecing everyone for not being available enough for them

I even did the unthinkable *GASP* I SHUT DOWN my FACEBOOK!!! lol.... I am already making some people have a super flip from leaving facebook, imagine if I shut down my email accounts too and they have to call me on the phone like the olden days??!?!?! lol....

Yup, sad it is at this point.

2. “Social Media Week” being held overseas for years, is now coming to the city of Mumbai. Collaboration, exchange of thoughts and you can do much more. Break those boundaries, learn, and share! Change is happening everywhere. What are you waiting for? I was there last year for the SMW in London. It’s amazing. I’m not missing it this time, and so don’t you. Check out this link for details www.facebook.com...
