Use The Search Feature!

The search feature if you can even call it that is terrible.

This rant is so old. We know. Btw no matter what any of these rants say, no the search feature doesn't always work. Do something original. I won't be checking back here so have fun with your criticism of my post.


Eta: if you read one.. Don't even bother looking at an identical thread. Maybe I should make a rant about about people complaining about looking at duplicate threads and complaining.


Eta2: Sorry couldn't leave thos alone. Make a rant to ATS about a search that works.

To me...you are really quite humorous...thanks for your replies...they were very entertaining...

I get that the search is problematic, but hey in this context that is just a poor excuse. Check the bloody fire hose. It is not that stuffing difficult!

OP, good rant, these need to be aired once in a while just to remind people.

Agreed with first poster. The new search is rubbish in my opinion. You do a search find no results so you post your thread then find there are already 2/3/4/5 threads going..

What are we meant to do..

They need to create a better search engine that sorts and filters, search by category, time of post and all the works!

to look for duplicate thread for an event that happened 2 days ago, we can apply time range to search feature to look for any duplicates. Or to see who started the thread first by chronological order.


Im pretty sure the admins know this, but there is something preventing them from doing it... not sure what.

Now if you would have used the search feature before writing this thread you would have clearly seen that there have been many threads created about people using the search feature

Like I say in every thread ranting about this, people are lazy and some just don't care and want the attention.

It isn't hard ot see the attention seekers on here. Some are long time members who use the "I looked" or "search didn't work" excuse as to why they didn't bother to check to if it was posted. They think they are the only person in the world who has seen it on ATS.

There are a lot of things I come across that I Want to share but after I check the forums and the search engine I see it has been posted already. Why post something that has already been posted?! If you just want to share the information then you should be happy to see someone else did and you can join their conversation. Too many people on here value fake stars and flags. It should be about content NOT how many flags or stars or the status of a members posts are.

You have brought up a good point...some people are (fakers)...they say they used the search feature; but they didn't really...they want their stars and flags.

The "search" function was upgraded so that it functioned very well, and then was outsourced to an up and coming company that was ready at last to take on Google . . . not.

I can understand the frustration, but I have personally seen cases where nothing showed up in the search, but there was already a thread on some fairly new topic. I think at times, newer stuff just doesn't show up for a while. Example: when the Pope was chosen, I did a search, found nothing, literally, and started a thread. As it happens, there were already a couple started, within the last hour or so before mine. I would guess that was the case for these others as well.

I was one of those Obama/Satan look-a-like thread posters of whom you speak. In the past, I used to use the old ATS search feature very successfully, though neglected to use the new one this time because:

A.) It has been less helpful and precise than the old one.
B.) I was in a rush...and was lazy.

However, as soon as I came across an earlier-posted thread on the same topic (shortly into the first page and within a short period of time) I voluntarily and unilaterally, closed my thread...linking my top and bottom postings to the other thread (ATS never contacted me or closed it prior).

iv used the search alot but yet i still cannot get my avatar to work, dont know how to flag threads, kinda a newbie here .. and help would be grately appreciated

Hi...I know sometimes it is really challenging to find your way on ATS. The ATS (Freshman's Forum) is a good place to start; this forum has a lot of useful information to study.

I'm glad when certain stories get posted more than once.

Often times the first thread gets buried and if it weren't for the later thread being posted I would have never seen it.

ATS has moderators to keep track of those issues. They also seem to get plenty of help when a topic is posted more than once. There is always a never ending stream of wanna be mods who chime in with ... "already posted".

F--- the search feature.

Saw the same thing with the Chuck Norris beard business, about 5 different threats were posted.
