Actually the polarity of the Sun began to switch last year. And, as you can see, the process is continuing (green is "south").
By the time we get to the next minimum it will have completely reversed.

Not really. The magnetic field lines seen in the SDO imagery shows connections between solar regions.
Yes, the SDO magnetic field pattern will appear more like a bar magnet when complete.
That is a model of the reversal of Earth's magnetic field. The Sun's field does not work the same way.
This video has a great snapshot between reversals /during a reversal comparison at 2:19 in the video.
Why? That's the corona. And the image is a composite.
I'm thinking by Friday March 22, 2013 our suns energy pattern will look more like this.
Isn't it odd that our moon is just the right size to give spectacular views like this
