Okay, so I moved from Washington State to Idaho recently. I've been here a while now and adjusted myself to the culture a bit. Last night, I was standing in a crowded sub restaurant downtown.

I realized that if someone came with an assault rifle, the first thing that people would think is that he was an idiot for not knowing anything about gun safety, and the second thing, that he was being immature, and then someone would shoot him, because I bet at least five people in that crowd had concealed carry permits.

I then thought about if I was in that restaurant in New York or something, and some Democrat got his hands on an assault rifle for the first time in his life, and had no gun safety courses, and no experience with guns. He would feel the power in his hands and all of us in the restaurant would have been screwed, running and diving for cover.

If you live in a gun culture, people are not stupid, they have a lot of experiences with guns and gun safety - it is not socially okay to even point an unloaded gun at someone.

The prarie home companion wrote a nice piece about living in the west a while back (california isn't the west for reasons I won't go into).

The West has you out on your own, so you have to drive everywhere and with security, the nearest Sheriff could be a solid 30 minutes away.

All right, first of all, I do like the second amendment, second of all, there are probably a lot of threads about it because it is an important issue. Lastly, I don't think anything I said was immature.

Not necessarily. Democrats have good and bad ideas, just like Republicans do. It's not a good idea to think about everything along party lines, there *might* be commonalities between all of the Republican and Democrat views, but even the senators and house members don't vote along party lines every time.

Let's say you are pro-choice, and you base your opinion of gun control on that. It makes no sense, they are completely unrelated issues. In fact, if you were pro-choice, it would make more sense for you to be against gun control.

Also, I do tend to be rather liberal, even though my threads lately don't seem that way - I just criticize what I think to be bad logic on either side of the isle.

I am actually interested in a Democratic movement for the people, but I don't think that gun control will not meet the objective of providing a safe environment for people, and there seems to be evidence supporting that.

You should follow your own advice buddy.

This whole thread is based on Party Lines.

The second amendment was clearly designed to protect the citizens from their government and from enemies other than their government. well regulated means trained, which has every other use as a hunting and target practice tool.

you can't keep bear and use arms effectively if you don't have one on your person or close at hand

The thread is along one issue, which is gun control, and more specifically, gun culture in Idaho. In order to be along party lines, I would have to be addressing at least two different issues that matched party lines.

I did use an example of New York, because it has the most strict gun control laws. You could be right, maybe there are a lot of citizens with concealed carry permits and experience in guns there as well.

I don't know, check out some of these threads of mine -, they are not that conservative.

Why Ending Sex Segregation is Healthy
Fears of Conservative Fundamentalism
Anti-Occupy Law Ends American's Right to Protest

I actually do like these threads better.

And wait a minute, you are attacking my character instead of the argument I brought up, that is called Argumentum Ad Hominem and is a well-known logical fallacy.

If we are to get into a debate, I would prefer you find some flaws in my argument so we can flesh our views out a bit. If your main argument against mine is that I'm a Republican, that's not only a bad argument, but incorrect. I am a registered Democrat.

If I'm reading you right here Op, you're saying people in areas where guns are the norm, adapt and live that way safely and with few problems. People who live where guns aren't the norm, likewise adapt and with few problems. Mixing the two isn't a wise idea...and the two places may not fully appreciate how unlike they really are for appreciating that fact.

If that's what you're saying..or close.. I'm 100% behind ya. Ditto being in California vs. being in Missouri. Here? I'd think nothing of going to a friends house and seeing an AR-15 or a .45 sitting somewhere around and in plain view. In California, I'd have a bit of unease ..and wondering who didn't take their happy pills that morning?

Yeah, that is totally what I am saying. If you give an assault rifle to someone in a city where guns are not the norm, that could be messy. So maybe it is a good idea to leave it to the states to decide?

In states like Idaho, people want to be free to have their gun collections, go shooting, hunting, etc. and there really isn't much danger to it. People really do go to shooting ranges with assault rifles, it is like a hobby to them, and they have enough experience and gun safety courses and social pressure to do it right.

Thanks for enlightening me and realizing this is a good issue to leave to the states to decide, and I think I understand the whole issue a lot clearer now.
