I"m sure that he saw how ineffective Pope John Paul II was .. how infirm .. how bad it was for the church to have a leader who couldn't lead ... and he knew he wasn't capable of doing the job anymore, so he UPDATED the church and introduced them to the concept of a pope retiring.

It's just about the only thing he did that I agree with.

Pope Benedict was blind in one eye .. he was falling down all over the vatican .. he'd fall out of bed ... he was NOT a healthy fella. But no .. I dont' think he ws insane. In fact, his retirement was VERY SANE. IMHO

As for the prayer for 'protection' ... I don't see anything wrong with it.
We all can do with some protection from dark spiritual forces as well
as the dark human ones who wish to do us harm.
