CAPE CANAVERAL, May 30--Evidence of the devastating effect polyurethane foam can have when hitting the leading edge of a space shuttle wing became
clear during tests ordered by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB). Engineers at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas,
obtained the stunning result on May 29 as they performed the second round of such impact tests.
I understand that Mr. Dittermore leaving was his choice and one I believe he made from his heart. But the program sure lost a good one. I hope his
replacement is as committed, talented, and of the level of integrity as he is.
