'Several dead' in Swiss shooting

Breaking news just coming out.

Several people have been killed and seriously injured during a shooting at a factory near the Swiss city of Lucerne, police say.

This is sad event for the Swiss.

As most people know Switzerland has one of the largest militia gun ownership rates in the world.

Men are allowed to keep their rifles and/or pistols at home and are encouraged after military service to keep their guns to prevent crimes such as breaking and entering etc...

Each such individual is required to keep his army-issued personal weapon (the 5.56x45mm Sig 550 rifle for enlisted personnel and/or the 9mm SIG-Sauer P220 semi-automatic pistol for officers, military police, medical and postal personnel) at home or (as of 2010) in the local armoury (Zeughaus).

Up until October 2007, a specified personal retention quantity of government-issued personal ammunition (50 rounds 5.56 mm / 48 rounds 9mm) was issued as well, which was sealed and inspected regularly to ensure that no unauthorized use had taken place.

The ammunition was intended for use while traveling to the army barracks in case of invasion.

However, it is interesting to notice that in Switzerland it is VERY rare to see these types of killings in occurance to other countries with high gun ownerships. (Makes you wonder why?)

I have a feeling that this will set off another gun debate, but it would be respectful to keep this to Switzerland for once!

but until now had relatively little gun crime.
