The word "abomination" is used all the way through the Old Testament to mean "something being worshipped other than the Biblical God".

Obviously the statue set up by Antiochus fits the description and was the original cause of "desolation" (a sense of isolation from God), but any
direct substitute for God would do the same.
The "seven years" mentioned in Daniel is not called a period of tribulation; It's the period when a particular ruler has power.
And we should note that he sets up the Abomination in the MIDDLE of this period; in other words, if it was coming soon, it would have to be the work
of a ruler who's already in place.
It certainly isn't going to be at the beginning of somebody's reign.
