I've often wondered about the homogenization of language in a one world government. There are predictions and prophecies about one currency, one faith, and unless I'm remembering incorrectly one language. I always assumed it would be English or a hybrid of English since so many countries use English and even now major non-english speaking nations like China have a large English speaking population. However I have begun to believe that in order to completely break the sovereign nation mindset of Americans and make us more willing to be ruled by a foreign power, our language couldn't be the one used. How many times have you heard, "why should I have to press 1 for English", or "you're in America, learn the language" even though there is no official language of the US.

With that introduction the reason for this post is the following article. I would like to hear your thoughts and please since I don't know most of you, could you say whether or not you are in the US.

Without further ado here is the article and a few snippets from it.
www.bbc.co.uk...

"It is a controversial theory which has been given some weight by new findings from a Yale University behavioural economist, Keith Chen.

Prof Chen says his research proves that the grammar of the language we speak affects both our finances and our health.

Bluntly, he says, if you speak English you are likely to save less for your old age, smoke more and get less exercise than if you speak a language like Mandarin, Yoruba or Malay."

"In his research paper, he says that compared to speakers of languages which use a future tense, speakers of languages with no real future tense are:

Likely to have saved 39% more by the time they retire
31% more likely to save in a year
24% less likely to smoke
29% more likely to be physically active
13% less likely to be obese
"

I quite like the English language. I am from the Netherlands so it's easy for to understand. I learned most of it through the internet and tv, watching movies etc. I learned the grammar at school, well, partly. Ofcourse I do make mistakes, but atleast I am understandable.
Germanic languages are not that hard, however Asian languages and Russian are not my thing really.

Don't really know about the factualness of the study. Someone else could do the exact same study and come out with completely different results. Over time I have learned that the results of any particular study are completely dependent on the attitude of the person/people conducting the study and what they are hoping to prove.

As far as prophecy/predictions- everyone has heard about one world currency and one world religion (as well as a one world government) but I've never heard of a one world language in any prophecy.

I just don't think that English in any form could be the language used. I would consider English from England and American English would be "the same". I know there are lots of differences but I could have a conversation with Karl Pilkington for example but I couldn't have one with the average guy on the street in China. At this point isn't Mandarin the most spoken language on the planet?

I don't think the one world language is "official" prophecy like in revelation or anything, but I've sure I've seen it somewhere in the non-canonized books. It's kind of a thumbing of the nose at the tower of Babel. Seems like something the anti-christ would be interested in. You'll have to forgive me if I'm incorrect, I was raised Christian and in Christian schools learning all the Bible stuff, but am now atheist and in my transition I read a lot on non-canonized books and alternative view points in an attempt to reconcile issues I was having with the faith.

English is the most widely spoken language on the planet with about half a Billion speaking it as a first language and another 1,5 billion speaking it to some degree. China actually has the highest number of English speakers of any country!!!

If there is going to be a 1 world language it will be English, 90% of all data stored is in English, if 2 people from different countries converse its usually in English, Most schools around the world teach it.

For any language to take over would take 100,s of years and only then via a serious and concerted effort.
Even if all native English speaking countries somehow got wiped out tomorrow it would still be the worlds most widely spoken language

Pretty worthless piece of research.

One obvious, glaring anomaly is that it's linguistic research carried out by a non-linguist.

Apart from the multiple factors which dictate why people do things like smoke or save that don't seem to have been ruled out, Prof Chen shows his ignorance of the language he purports to speak and understand - English.

English-speakers often don't use the future tense to express the future; they use the present tense.

"I am going out" can be either present or future, depending on context.

And the theory that one's thinking and behaviour are influenced by the language one speaks is a controversial and unproven one.

Best leave linguistic research to the linguists, Prof Chen.

Well I suppose its somewhat reassuring that at least on here the general reaction is that the research is crap and that if there is a one world language on the way, at least I'm already speaking it..

Commercial aviation

All crew are required to speak English across the world.

That should be some indication of what language would be preferred, if any.

Highly unlikely the world will interfere with this given the huge costly disruption (and not just monetary either) it would cause to aviation industry worldwide.

Yes, it is, actually. If America had had another official language, say French, the French would be saying the same thing as you right now, because it is the "American Empire," if you will (including Hollywood), that has caused the widespread use of English. If it had been left to England alone, it never would have happened. You can call that jingoistic if you want, but it's still a fact and you did it first.

You wouldn't even be able to understand the original English language that came FROM ENGLAND! The language now includes a large percentage of German, French, Latin, and Greek, not to mention an ever increasing amount of Spanish and Japanese, depending on where you are. Then there's "English" and "Engrish," which may be close, but has heavy, heavy Asian influence.

Luckily for all of us the written language is more or less the same, but when you get to the spoken language things change rapidly. You average west coast American cannot easily understand someone from various places in New England or the deep south, though, because of the pervasive mid-west/Western accent of the news and television, those people can understand the west. I was at a conference in Stockholm, Sweden a few years ago where the official language was, you guessed it, English. I could understand the guy from Egypt perfectly. The only guy I couldn't understand at all was from Scotland. I have no idea what he said, but I guess it was funny because he certainly thought so.

Im sure youve heard of the British Empire, lasted about 300 years and is the largest empire the world has ever seen.

That was responsible for the spreading of the English language long before America let alone Hollywood came along. In a thousand years time America will be seen as a continuation of the British Empire much like the Byzantine Empire is lumped in with the Roman Empire.

English as we know it has been in existence for about 500 years and even if you went back nearly 1200 yrs you wouldnt have too many issues understanding people after some adjustment

Im Australian not English so this isnt about defending my motherland or being patriotic or anything like that

Sure it is. When the British Empire was extant, French was by far and away, the universal language. Even the British court spoke it over English. The dominance of the US (and I also am not saying this is a good thing) has put English over the top in terms of the potential for a universal language. I'm thinking the combination of Hollywood and rapid communication is largely responsible for this, myself. But if you look at the rise of English speakers in terms of numbers and percentages, this has happened in the 20th century, which corresponds to the fall of the British Empire, not its rise. And I'm very sorry for the fall, truly. I consider myself an Anglophile and am of largely British heritage. Had I had the chance to express my opinion in the 18th century, I feel certain I would have been a Loyalist, as my ancestors surely were.

There is already Esperanza and Pidgen. Both are arguably meant as international languages - the first by design and the second organically.

Ya know in the biblical endtimes prophecies of Jesus...he repeated the phrase "as in the days of Noah" most commonly this is taken to mean people going about their daily lives taking no note of the situation....Well according to bible teachings (thus the context of this) men of the earth at that time spoke only one language...it wasn't until the fall of the Tower of Babel did we begin using different languages.

Just saying...if we did move to one language, that would make these times even closer to 'the days of Noah'
