Joined Reddit - lasted 5 minutes.

I often browse Reddit and recently decided to join. I didn't last long and it wasn't much fun. Instantly most replies I had were negative, belittling and generally seemed to be people stroking their own egos. (even more so than on here).

Was interested to see if many ATS members are regular Reddit posters and if any one else has had a similar experience on the website.

On a side note - as much as I love the internet, I think most social media is slowly turning everyone against each other and making many self centered, conceited and generally what seems like unhappy people. Or is it just me? ha.

Isn't reddit just that small ignorant place that is like a more organised 4chan? In terms of people who frequent it, not content?

Why on earth would anyone wanna join that sort of club.

You just have to suck it up.

If you post something and it gets downvoted into oblivion, the rule is wait two or three weeks and re-post it. You'll be raking in the upvotes. I don't know why this works, but it does.

Get RES (reddit enhancement suite) for your browser. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.

I'm on reddit. I think there is a bit of a learning curve when people first start posting. You have to say things in a certain way otherwise the downvotes and nastiness will flood you. What topic were you discussing? My advice? Ignore the karma BS and just post what you want. Reddit is fickle, one joke will get you 500 upvotes but if you post it at the wrong time will get you shot down. My highest rated comment was incredibly stupid and had 700+ upvotes. It was kinda sad but oh well.

4chan --> reddit --> 9gag --> facebook.

At least that's how the content seems to get distributed.

In the past I have just found it good for interesting links and news, all that other meme crap I wasn't into though. Also the Ask me anything section often has interesting people

Reddit is massive. A lot of the same jokes and content are shared with 4chan but you can easily change which subreddits you view and there are a ton that would interest ATSers that aren't offensive at all. There's a reason they call it the front page of the internet. If you think ATS posts news fast you would be surprised. Generally by the time I've quit reading reddit and come here all the 'Breaking News' is pretty old.

Nah, done my member dash there - wasn't what I thought it would be. I was not worried about all the karma crap or anything, I just didn't get anything out of it in the end. Il just continue to browse certain sections occasionally.

I'm with you on that.

I like how there are local sub reddits for my community. I haven't gone to a meetup yet (not sure I want to). There is a sub for just about any topic imaginable.

I was going to say what you said -- usually the breaking news on reddit takes a while to end up on ATS, if at all. I will admit, however, reddit is fairly liberal.

The AMA's can be great sometimes. I remember reading the Bill Gates one recently and learned that Google Bing is great for porn.

A guy that lived with me a while ago almost got the liscense plate "TLDR" I promptly did a real-life downvote on him.

I need to check out the Seattle subreddit. I'm not all that worried about meeting crazies and I could always use more friends. I think I would probably get along with about 1 in 10 redditors in real life.

They are fairly liberal, but it seems if you post something with that in mind you can get some pretty good feedback even with an unpopular opinion.

I was not aware of the Bing thing. Good to know. Especially today! I keep meaning to read that Bill Gates AMA. He lives about 5 minutes away from me and I was going to ask him to come over and have a beer. Fat chance, but you never know.

I think your 4chan-reddit-9gag-Facebook is pretty accurate. I still like hopping on 4chan now and then. yeah it's disgusting and often juvenile, but that's why I like it.

You have now inspired me to rewatch Archer. AGAIN.

I remember years ago seeing on the top of news items and the rare blog, the name reddit, and this was when these things were more of an annoyance than a subculture of the internet.. at least from my perspective at the time.

I was rarely involved with forums then, so it just seemed silly.

I blinked once and the next thing I knew it was considered the front page of the internet.. I had a quick peek, but it was just all over the place.. or seemed to be..

But I know what you mean. It does seem like the sort of place where you need to know the culture before you can join in.

hmm I may have to investigate a little more, I've never looked beyond the main page really..

I would put it as Facebook -> Reddit -> 4chan -> 9gag

I justify the order as Facebook and Reddit are both capable of being informative as well as disgusting. The last two make a point of just being disgusting as much as possible.

Hey, it's like Detroit. If you don't do your research and find out exactly what you're getting into, then you're probably gonna wander down a few backroads that leave a bad taste in your mouth. In fact, almost every place (internet and otherwise) is like that.
