Strange face in the rock

the thing is there are carvings all over the edge and they are all well known, this has never been mentioned even though it is a well known rock because of the connection with the iron gates.

here is a picture of the carving at the wizards well. it is quite ancient and thought to be of merlin, the inscription below is more recent, and was done by the grandfather of alan garner.
