How interesting!
Should make election time a bit more fun come September then.

But surely Assange would have to actually get to Australia first, let alone leave the Embassy in the UK. He is still stuck in the embassy, right? As soon as he steps out, he'll be piled on by UK police...

According to the article:

Australian citizens living overseas can enrol to vote as an overseas elector, and consequently run as a Senate candidate if they left Australia within the past three years and intend to return within six years of their date of departure.

You're absolutely correct. Julian is simply looking for a way to get home safely, and get back to work.

I think it would be absolutely wonderful if Assange was elected in absentia.

Really! How cool would that be?

But for the fact that I don't think that being an Australian Senator automatically qualifies one for diplomatic immunity.

Or immunity from prosecution, especially with "crimes" committed before in office.

So ... I doubt that's the reason he's putting his hat in the ring.

I dont think so, Im trying to find out

In general, a diplomatic officer in Australia who is a national or permanent resident of Australia will enjoy immunity from jurisdiction and inviolability only in respect of official acts performed in the exercise of his or her functions. This is often referred to as "functional immunity". No other privileges or immunities will be accorded

Or immunity from prosecution, especially with "crimes" committed before in office.

Alledged crimes; he has yet to be convicted of any. However any previous criminal record in Australia--dont know if he has one??, would disqualify him from taking a senate seat; Tho not disqualify him from running for one as I understand it.

So ... I doubt that's the reason he's putting his hat in the ring.

I think its the next logical step, the Commonwealth are messing him around, so he is trolling them back. I applaud it

Loads of people get away with rape because the accusers are lying scumbags. Come on, think this through.

One way to see who is lying and that's for him to face his accusers in what would be a widely reported event. We could all then be able to see the facts.

If this was not Saint Assange we would all be baying for his blood.

Facing facts is what led to Bradley Manning's unconstitutional imprisonment. Obviously Julian is way more involved in leaking government secrets than Manning. It isn't really a secret why he is so apprehensive to turn himself over.

I hope he does win. That would be a good day in humanity, good day indeed.

Go Julian... I hope he wins. Australians are very cool.
As for the so called 'sex charges'... how can consensual sex ever be 'rape'. The charges are ludicrous. The women only made them days after the events and no doubt they were influenced by the Swedish government who want to play friends to the USA for some reason.

I wonder if he or anyone on his behalf is working on a way to get him out the embassy.
This is how I would orchestrate it...

Get a top movie makeup person to create a silicone mask for Julian, making him look like a Philippine cleaning lady (or lookalike of any of the cleaning ladies who clean the embassy). The plan is for him to walk out with the other cleaners, right past the police. I've seen silicone masks (combined with body suits and contact lenses/wig) that would fool you even in a close up situation.
Just before he exits create a major diversion outside the embassy... I would have a stuntman set himself on fire, as if in a political protest... this will get the journalists and any police there in a frenzy. While this is going on, Julian, disguised as a cleaning lady, walks out and walks the other way.
Now all he has to do is get on a container ship somehow and smuggle himself out of the country.

Question: If he could leave the UK would he be safe in Australia or do they have extradition proceedings with the USA?

I don't know how this self absorbed fool got media attention. He has exposed absolutely nothing. And is nothing but a distraction from what need's exposing, but prehap's that is his job.
Yes and he left the poor whistle blower kid out to hang and dry. He's a dog.

Do you actually know anything about this? Please read into details before you make a tit of yourself. Maybe check wikileaks, I reckon you would be surprised by just how much content is on there.

I say good luck to him, ive heard word on this for a while now. Will be interesting too see just how far it goes and how popular the group is, maybe it will be a start of something new!

I think Julian wants nothing more that to be able to clear his name.

The problem he faces is that Sweden are threatening to extradite him to the USA where he might face the death penalty for releasing the bad truths that American Government don't want us knowing.

Given that fact do you think it's unreasonable of him to be slightly anxious about going to Sweden to clear his name?

So technically, based on current voting systems, Anonymous could hack all voting results and then win the Senate seat. Thus performing multiple miracles, become Pope, release all secret documents held by the Vatican, and then collect all debt owed to Vatican from the U.S, UK, etc..or have them release all of their documents, make everything public for free on the web, thus propelling our race hundreds of years into the future, ridding most evils once all truth is known by all literate connected beings. Become a leader that freed mankind from ignorance and lies .Reinvest all that money donated or collected into creating a super techno-cyber punk military full of 90 foot robots to guard his country, purchase one country along the equator and create the most elaborate greenhouse to date, feeding all people in the world, ending one more problem that causes violence.
Or...he could go to a unnamed jail somewhere remote with zero electricity to rot for the rest of his existence.
Both are plausible.

Somehow I think if it were as simple as dressing up a blond man over 6 foot tall as a Philippine cleaning lady might not be the most effective way to go about this...

...but going on this theme; perhaps a Russian nanny; very common in the UK from what I hear?. Then one does have to plan for the event in which a Julian-In-Drag would be apprehended by the authorities and, being that this is such a high profile case: have to face the media as such. Great for raising the profile of Trans and Intersex peoples... /* end sarcasm */

Australia have extradition treaties with the US, but as far as I know (very happy to be proven wrong, because the person who gave me this info is a D*******), Australia has never sent to be prosecuted where a death penalty is a possibility. (That said I do vaguely recall a Chinese woman sent back to China that may have been a successful extradition???--will look into)

Cheers! And yes... his 6ft frame needs to be taken into account... tall Russian lady then. I would also suggest a fat suit... so a plump tall woman. Or even better have a few Assange lookalikes similarly made up and at the same time stage a fake escape from the rooftop, example, by the fake Assange/s.
Or they could dig a tunnel to a safe house.

No, we have paper ballots here in Australia, so hacking could only be done with an eraser and carbon paper by AEC employees who are impartial public servants

I actually like the sound of that

like this:

Nah, I hope he gets elected and holds the balance of power in the Upper House; Assange the Lawmaker--it works!

Julian Assange is as power hungry as the people he tries to expose.
He made Wikileaks all about him.

I'm not surprised he wants to be a politician, celebrity, or whatever else keeps him in the public eye.

Actually he has tried his best to stay out of the public eye as far as I can gather, going by information I have learned about the guy.

Again, happy to take in whatever information you would like to supply challenging this.
