Did a search and didn't find anything on this, if its in the wrong place, MODs please feel free to relocate.

Ground excavation started this week for the new CHIME radio telescope in Penticton, B.C.

The radio telescope will use components from the cellphone industry to capture and turn radio waves emitted six to 11 billion years ago into a massive three-dimensional map of a quarter of the observable universe — the biggest such map to date.

I find this to be quite interesting. Making a 3D map of the universe. This will be awesome once it is completed. This might help scientists understand the expansion of the universe a bit more as well as our origins maybe

"It's almost like time travel," said Kris Sigurdson, an astrophysicist from UBC and co-investigator on the project. "It's looking back into the past and how the universe was at that time and it's just amazing."

Mark Halpern, an astrophysicist from UBC who is also the project's principal investigator, said a NASA project known as the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) found the universe has expanded by a factor of 1,000 in every direction since the light we currently see was given off.

This thing will be huge, larger than 6 NHL hockey rinks

I cannot wait until this telescope is up and running, and see this "map " of course. it will likely take many years though.
I guess we'll just have to be patient.

Any thoughts ATS?

Well, there is a map for about a quarter of the observable sky: Sloan Digital Sky Survey. There will be more data when SDSS 3 is completed.

The universe looks like this:

Our universe looks like the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Lord have mercy.

If anyone wants to start a wikipedia page, they don't have an article on this yet as far as I could find. Good find OP, I haven't heard of this new project before. When will the telescope be "up and running"? Thanks.

Spoken like a true Canadian!

This is very interesting news; since it will be near Penticton I'll have to stop in for a visit next time I'm in the area.

I wish I could visit as well....but it would take me over a week to get there by car and too expensive to fly...

I think this deserves a bump. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) would appreciate it.
