FIREFIGHTERS are bracing for a return of horror bushfire conditions today with temperatures set to top 40C in large parts of southern and eastern Australia.
In New South Wales, about 600 firefighters are still battling 90 blazes across the state and are bracing for a second potential bushfire emergency today.
Rural Fire Service spokeswoman Bridie O'Connor said despite the high temperatures, forecast to hit 40C in parts of southern NSW, the fire threat was not expected to reach last week's catastrophic levels.
In Victoria total fire bans are in place across much of the state, with temperatures up to 43C expected in the north, and 39C forecast for Melbourne.
In South Australia fire bans are in place for most of the state, with six regions experiencing extreme fire danger and a further seven listed as severe.
