Just my thought on things i havent heard about Japan in awhile, and then i seen we had a Japan forum and for some reason i thought about the possibility of all that radiation affecting health in America are we actually being slowly poisoned and the media and our government is downplaying it or do we have nothing to worry about. Could big Pharma know whats going on and be using it to their advantage to flood the market with new vaccines for diseases that have mutated in some way due to exposure. was the meltdown strong enough to dose enough people for us to actually see it in everyones health?? Its not disease as such its more correctly a deterioration of the immune system and while I know nothing about the effects of nuclear radiation I wouldn't mind betting you are spot on.

yea im gonna do more research and build this topic i think this is definitely something that needs to be looked at.

Radiation in any dose can affect lymphocyte growth and development in individuals.

If you imagine your body is the battleground of WWI, and the opposing forces are the virus and your immune system respectively, lymphocytes are like the artillery.

When a virus infects your body, it forcibly enters your cells and hijacks the protein synthesis mechanisms to produce more of itself, your first response is to have lymphocytes carpet bomb the entire infection zone with an enzyme which kills cells indiscriminately. This does eradicate viruses, but for every infected cell destroyed, thousands of healthy cells are destroyed too.

This is responsible for the "sore throat" experience from a common cold.

This carpet bombing means there are pieces of cell debris and virus debris lining your throat, which will choke you if you do not remove it - hence excess mucus production or "runny nose."

The virus debris is picked up by macrophages in your body which carry pieces of the virus around your body to the thyroid, where billions and billions of cells exist which can completely eradicate any viral infection quickly and efficiently - the problem is, for each specific virus, only 1 T cell and 1 B cell exist in your body. The macrophages which pick up the invading virus need to come in to contact with those specific cells to trigger a response.

Once they meet, the T and B cells divide rapidly, the T cells act like Navy SEALs and go to the infected site, killing infected cells individually. Concurrently, the B cells release anti-bodies (air support) which attack the viruses which are outside cells and make it impossible for them to enter cells by surrounding their specific receptors.

This quickly eliminates the virus, and the T and B cells wither and die, except a small proportion of memory cells in your body which remain active throughout your life, making you immune to the same virus for as long as you live.

Obviously, the fewer lymphocytes, the fewer pieces of virus debris, the fewer macrophages circulating your body looking for the specific T and B cells to activate, the longer it takes for the infection to be dealt with (incidentally, you "get sick" all the time, but your immune response is so fast you often don't notice).

So yes, lymphocyte development is hindered by radiation, which affects your immune system.

The real question is - what proportion of radiation is actually reaching you, and how does that compare to radiation you expose yourself to every day by eating bananas?

I await the input of a resident physicist.

I don't know how accurate this website is but it seems very interesting in this topic.
Fallout, Swine flu, and a Pandemic of awareness

It all sounds like something out of a science fiction novel: 'a catastrophic nuclear war in 2030 covers the Earth with toxic radioactive fallout that gives rise to mutant viruses which infect and destroy

humans...' But, back in the 1950s, the so-called ‘father of the [Soviet] hydrogen bomb’ predicted that the radioactive fallout from the ‘Cold War’ could accelerate the rise of mutant pathogens, including influenzas.

One thing that has me very concerned is how people - a lot people are coming down with different types of cancers. Diagnosed seemingly quickly but when diagnosed it is at an advanced stage. three people I know all relatively young and very healthy. The weird thing is all three of them had shown the cancer went right to their bones and started eating away at the bones in the body. This was shown as soon as the diagnosis was made.and a PET scan was done.

It's very weird, scary, and freaky!

I don't think there is a direct link. On the side though, if people are more stressed it can cause more sickness. There is always side effects that have to be considered. People fearing the flu makes them more susceptible to it also. Their brainwashing techniques effect all of us, even those who don't think they are effected because their is always a little guilt.

Like the banana reference.

Besides bananas, other foods that are rich in potassium (and therefore in 40K) are potatoes, kidney beans, sunflower seeds, and nuts.[13][14] Brazil nuts, rich in 40K but also radium may have up to 444 Bq/kg (12 nCi/kg) – five times the radioactivity of bananas.[15][16] By the same reasoning originally used to arrive at the banana equivalent dose, one may conclude that all the food consumed in one year results in a total exposure of about 0.4 mSv (40 mrem), which is more than 10% of the total dose absorbed from all natural and man-made sources in that same period.[17] However, the same criticisms raised against the BED may apply to this estimate as well.

Whose to say.
All we can do is wait and see.
Our grandparents made it through the nuclear testing in the US.

Someone with a geiger counter and a better knowledge of physics than me, hopefully.

Well, my geiger counter hasn't shown any difference up here at ground level and people still have the flu. I've only tested about three times this last summer/fall but there hasn't been any measurable radiation rise yet,

When making associations like this, both side of the associations need to be present to make it true.

Case closed then, unless someone else comes along with a geiger counter and refutes you claims I guess.

Honestly, there is no relationship between the flu outbreak and any fukushima radiation,to be honest.
If there is a rise in certain cancers that can be tied into the USA being exposed to it down the road,it's possible.
But it's going to be a stretch.

All I'm saying is that the human immune system can be affected by radiation, as I described. rickymouse has said that there is no increase in radiation, so my scenario is moot.

The relationship of radiation on the immune system is well known and it has been known for many years. Not much is changed with that other than that some people are not as susceptible as others. The Saami for example.

You are right about that part but whether there is any ground level radiation is the issue. It may be other places but it isn't evident here.

From what I understand, the hot particles are RAINED down in North America.

So, on a sunny day, the geiger is fine.

On days your rain doesn't line up with the jet stream... it's fine.

Hot spots also happen in weird little pockets. Across the street could be different.

We need lots of people with geigers testing vigilant in lots of places, under all conditions, always, to really get a clear picture.

But there are certainly enough damning geiger videos out there to make me raise an eyebrow.

I should really get one for myself.

Sounds gravely like what i described big pharma taking advantage of our weakness. HMMM wonder if big pharma has enough money to sabotage a nuclear reactor in another country far enough away yet close enough to d damage to a large portion of the world. Just trying to connect the dots.

Radiation exposure certainly causes diabetes and a host of other diseases, as well as affecting the immune system. The mechanisms and relationships are complex - but real.
