U.S. Lags Peers in Life Expectancy

finance.yahoo.com

Americans die younger and have more illnesses and accidents on average than people in other high-income countries—even wealthier, insured, college-educated Americans, a report said Wednesday.

The study by the federally sponsored National Research Council and Institute of Medicine found the U.S. near the bottom of 17 affluent countries for life expectancy, with high rates of obesity and diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease and arthritis, as well as infant mortality, injuries, homicides, teen pregnancy, drug deaths and sexually transmitted diseases.

The U.S. is at or near the bottom in nine key areas of health: infant mortality and low birth weight; injuries and homicides; teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections; prevalence of HIV and AIDS; drug-related deaths; obesity and diabetes; heart disease; chronic lung disease; and disability.

Americans fare worse than people in other countries even when the analysis is limited to non-Hispanic whites and people with relatively high incomes and health insurance, nonsmokers, or people who are not obese.

I wish how we lived our lives was at least as important to us as how long they are. Even so, it appears we're getting double-whammied.

I'm not surprised. You all seem to be fretting your way to an early grave, if my experience on the internet is anything to go by.

So what? What really matters, the only things that matter, are that we have higher taxes and lower test scores compared to the rest of the world!! And we need to use all the power in Washington to remedy those areas ...at least that's what we hear everyday. .. Right? ... America is exceptional, and we only need to lower our taxes, that's all that matters ... Never a word about the other comparisons ...
...something is wrong here ... oh, well, at least we won't have to live as long wondering why we spend so much on health care without a better showing ...

Im in the midwest around Chicago, I've lived in New York, Vegas, and Tennessee ......all f these places have one thing in common: SOOOO MANY FAT PEOPLE!!!!!!!

Fast food is king, soft drinks the size of milk gallons, portions at restaurants are 3 people sized for 1 person, not to mention huge salad, huge appetizer, etc

They give out pain killers like tic tacs. Big Pharma has become legalized drug dealers. I have lost a cousin and friend from pain killer addictions.

It's the mentality here. Go big (literally) or go home. Big truck, Big house, Big food, Big gut, Big alcoholism, Big drug addiction, Big Big Big .......

So I'm not surprised. I'm a U.S. Citizen born and raised, but sometimes feel like an alien amongst the rest of the folks here

When the health care industry is all about profitting off the sick....

It turns into making people not so healthy on purpose

Well, go figure. Maybe if they quit telling people to eat so many goiterogens and quit feeding us so much alchemy to dampen us we could be healthy. Then if they raised the frequency of our power to sixty three to sixty seven cycles per second we would do a lot better yet. I like alchemy, it can be used to adjust your attitude so you can enjoy life and still be healthy. The FDA is messing it all up though, listening to those who profit by us being sick. Don't tie the genetics of a fungus to our food so our bodies reject it. Then our bodies are always in a state of inflammation trying to fight the foods. They got us over a barrel and know it. How many of our congressmen know this? I think they are ignorant of what is going on. The doctors aren't allowed to challenge the pharma companies, the pharma companies are controlling too much.

You may just be a lucky one whose body does not overreact to the "flavor enhancers" and appetite stimulants put into most commercial food preparations. I am pretty much normal weight and moderate lifestyle all around but I have sympathy for people whose bodies go nutz from the stuff put in their foods to get them to consume more. In many, too many, cases the stuff works like a champ.

Americans pioneered "living large" in the world. Other nations are catching up now so they won't be the bad statistic for too much longer. The American health industry revolves around providing a pill for everything and a cure for nothing. I feel Americans are largely victims of corporate consumerism. Give them the proper nutrition and promote better social values and I expect most would be alright. Give Americans credit for being the worldś guinea pigs for experimenting in societal values gone crazy.

I too was an American born and raised. I escaped from that nut house while I could sill find my way out. I see things from a different perspective now.

I just got back from a month long trip in Bulgaria. My wife and I noticed quickly and it wasn't lost on us at all, that when spending day after after day walking around Sofia, the capital, we saw no fat people at all. Literally. I think in total, over the course of an entire month we saw no more than five fat people and I am not exaggerating at all.

What's the difference in lifestyle? They walk. They're active. Even in freezing weather people got outside and walked the streets, walked the parks. The other? They don't eat processed food. Everyone cooks their dinners at night. Meat, lots of veggies and salad. Every single night. The supermarkets there don't have microwavable dinners/meals for the most part. You'd have to look, and look hard to find a microwavable meal.

Sandwiched between time in Sofia was time spent in a remote village near the Romanian border where my wife's grandparents live. One is 88, the other 83. Healthier than ever. Still active and farm/grow much of their food.

It took no longer than five minutes upon landing back here in the US that we saw more fat people than during our month long stay in Bulgaria. Something else occurred to me upon seeing two fat people in motorized wheelchairs in the airport here. We didn't see a single wheelchair bound person in Bulgaria. Not one. Everyone walks and is active so there isn't even the possibility of gaining enough wait that you have trouble walking.

It's a lifestyle issue and many are more than comfortable passing the blame onto government. Many on ATS are that way as well. People love to complain, yet I personally made a thread detailing exactly which food/brands are gmo vs non-gmo, and that thread got little reaction. Know why? Because once everyone has that information there's no more excuses for their own personal health. With that information they actually have to change the way they eat and shop. But instead, it's easier to sit here and complain about all the crap government puts in our food while sitting at your computer, chomping on a microwavable hungryman dinner.

People also always have an excuse for not exercising. Give me a break. If you have two legs and aren't in orbit around earth in the space station, you can step outside wherever the hell you are and walk briskly for 30 minutes everyday. No time? Well, you have time for ATS. You have time for reality tv. You have time for video games. You have time to shop at the mall. You have time for coffee at Starbucks. But no time to walk a little and actually cook dinner.

One other thing, medications aren't handed out left and right in Bulgaria. People are more active, eat healthier, and as a result feel better about themselves. Imagine that. There's none of this, oh you feel sad, take a pill, oh you feel depressed, take a pill, oh you have back pain, take a pill, oh you have anxiety, take a pill, oh your knee hurts because you're 80 pounds overweight, take a pill instead of actually losing the weight.

Americans have turned into pampered babies always looking to shift the blame. Looking for the convenient way out and taking little accountability. And I am American and have spent my life here so don't think for a second I'm some American bashing foreigner. But when traveling, it's pretty eye opening to see people who are considerably happier and healthier than the average American even though they have less. Sometimes much less.

well now, it does appear that vaccines are producing the desired effect.

well done folks ... we have managed to scientifically reduce our quality and longevity with propaganda and 'cough' legal drugs.

the cartels should be proud ... it only took an extra 16yrs or so.

for those who don't follow ... this is the direct effect of the first generation to receive vaccines

You're not enjoying things better than Canadians, or other counties. Life is the same routine, nearly the same stores, and towns, same schools, same day to day living. You're just being shafted and its not just in really messed up medical care, but its also in the kind of toxins around, the nuclear testing grounds of the past, I just keep feeling the US is a huge toxic soup, and that decreases life expectancy even in wealthier groups.

But you don't live magically better than other countries. In fact, I'm pretty sure more people are living on less there, and more homeless, so more people have less enjoyment in their lives AND a not so great medical system.
