What the hell is that ?
Anyone care to translate this into useful units of measure ?
Like beard/seconds or square barns ?

Sorry for my non-collaborative post, but I had to get this off my chest.

But back on topic, like you said OP, it is quite interesting and unusual.

Arbitrary?

Outside of North America, Football (
Soccer) is the most popular sport on the planet. If anyone can relate to a measurement, it is of a Football pitch.

If someone named Lex Luthor tries to sell you prime real estate there, you should probably be leery.

At the very least daintily frugal.

Well, I just rowed out there the other day to have a look....

A very large man with long curly hair was sitting on the shore, eating a bucket of chicken. He seemed to be holding a piece out to me when he turned and spoke to someone only he could see, just before there was a bright flash of light and I was suddenly alone in the surf.

I decided to retreat, when I noticed a column of black smoke rising from the far side...hopefully I wasn't followed.

Arbitrary ? Yes absolutely.

Media in the UK also use the football pitch as a unit of length, although an area of the association football pitch is not fixed, but varies within a limit of 90–120 m (98–130 yd) in length and 45–90 m (50–100 yd) in width.

So why not use a unit of measure that the rest of the planet can relate to ? Like I don't know, a meter ?

Nothing personal here. I am equally annoyed when the American media uses the football field unit and whatnot.

Cheers.

An island the size of 25 football pitches has appeared seemingly out of nowhere off the coast of Germany. The landmass, which is composed of sandbanks, gradually emerged from the violent waters of the North Sea over the past few years. It lies 15 miles off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany’s far north in a stretch of coastline known as the Wattenmeer, a marine national park. Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk... It is the first time in a quarter of a century that a discernible landmass has appeared in the coastal waters off Germany.
Detlef Hansen, head of the national park, said; 'This is for us conservationists anything but ordinary.'
Tidal actions unrelated to global warming or other earthly phenomena have created the island.
Thought this was an interesting article to look at how an island appears and develops over time.
Most interesting and quite unusual.

Wait, Germany has a coast? .......................... Google maps = yeah it does Just below Denmark. So if you asked me to guess if Germany had a coast I would have said no, I just have the vision of Euro countries surrounding it without a coast.

So indeed this post is useless and you have just wasted your time reading it........................................... still reading? Really wasting time now................

Want a beer?

Holland is having a problem with that. The sea currents have changed and are removing the shore line which is hammering at the dikes. If the dikes ever went, so goes lots of Holland.
