Even though the process in not clearly understood, Phage's post claiming it to be of earth origins does make sense. As to the Mega in the OP title, well the real name for one of these things is megacryometeor, so it would stand to reason that the author of the article used that for the basis of the mega in the mega ice meteor title.

Not saying this is the case, but: Potable water and blue water from the holding tanks of aircraft have been known to leak. It is a drip or very slow leak not caught on the pre-flight inspection, or, occurs in-flight due to many factors to include; differential pressure, faulty seal at the dump station or fill receptors of the aircraft, even a valve that becomes unseated during flight..

The ice continues to grow due to subfreezing temps at altitude and normally breaks away from the aircraft on decent (warmer temps) or when the chuck of frozen stuff gets to large to maintain it's gripe on the airframe due to air resistance.

If your new found chunk of ice has a blueish tent or purple you might want to handle with protective gloves unless of course you are someone who wants to study other people's ground up poo and urine by licking your fingers......Never met one of those and hope I never do.....

So basically its just a big hail ball that gets trapped up in the air longer then the little hail balls (for some reason).

Then when it does come crashing down scientists give a technical name to confuse people.

Got it!

The Apollo astronauts space suits were said to eliminate waste heat by having water turn into ice and then it sublimates into a gas in the vacuum of space. So, someone is lying.
edit on 30-12-2012 by banishedfromthisarea because: Some people may not know that space is a vacuum (near vacuum) and that astronauts on the moon are technically in space as there is a vacuum there too.
And, that the space suits supposedly discharged water onto the outer part of the cooling system where it froze and then sublimated into a gas.
edit on 30-12-2012 by banishedfromthisarea because: (no reason given)
