I want to start out by saying I think antidepressants are grossly overprescribed and handed out like candy by doctors. There are also theories out there that "big brother" wants us to take these pills and dumb us down and all..... and also, we don't even really know how they work. I think part of it is a conspiracy to some extent.

Mental illness is real though. I suffer pure-o OCD and have been through all the therapies and alternative treatments you can name, and even natural routes, such as having an intense exercise routine and keeping my diet in check. I also tried natural supplements and remedies available from the naturopathic route.

I was on Zoloft for a couple years about 7 years ago because my OCD and intrusive thoughts got really bad. Zoloft worked wonders. it really helped me. I stopped after about 2 years and my OCD and intrusive thoughts were pretty much under control until about 4 months ago. I was really reluctant to go onto another antidepressant because I was scared to death after reading all the anti-anti-depressant literature online and how it makes people braindead and all the sorts; so I opted for a "safer" route. I was put on Klonopin, which did NOTHING for me, except give me extreme physical dependency on it. I am having a really hard time coming off of the drug, and i read online that withdrawal can last anywhere from weeks, to months, to years, even after short use. Wow.... I really wish i researched better.

So now I am put under the extreme burden of a benzodiazapine withdrawal; and of course it exasperates everything, and my OCD like symptoms are getting worse. It is time I think I start looking for an antidepressant to help calm my thoughts.

The reason i write all of this is I wanted to share my personal experiences with you with mental illness and psych meds; and I would love to know if anyone else is on any psych drugs; what are your feelings on them; and am I going to do myself more harm by going onto an antidepressant again....just want general opinions. Thank you :-)

I took zoloft years ago and didnt really like it, it made me too aggressive and agitated.
Then a couple of years ago, the doc gave me Prozac and I really liked it and seemed to work
for me.
The only problem is, I took it for about a year and when I stopped, I did suffer withdrawals.
They say you dont but I did.

The mental health providers at the VA have prescribed me all sorts of things....and I take none of them anymore...I don't like being a zombied out uncreative person and that is what everything they have prescribed turned me into. I'd rather deal with whatever mental problems they can't seem to agree upon concerning me through music, writing and painting.

I know some people who say the various meds have helped them. As for me? I found them to be a hindrance to my well being.

im currently on wellbutrin, my first antidepresent and haven't had any noticeable side effects, and have been pretty cheery for the most part. It is not a SSRIs so that is a plus too. good luck

Do not look to outside sources for your sanity nor strength. Look within and understand you were made that way for a reason, and that you can rise above it. As a previous poster has said, practice meditation, develop a foundation for progress. Taking pills will do nothing but keep you from feeling (and understanding) reality.

I also believe they are entirely overprescribed. I think bi-polar is simply the human condition, though I know there are those that need these drugs, they do nothing but make you feel less, not better. OCD is another thing entirely and I don't have an answer for that or why they would put you on anti-depressants for that.

Klonopin is the devil IMHO. I had a real problem with benzos when I was on antidepressants as a lot of them effected me like amphetamines and totally rob me of much needed sleep. I found it to be like Valium with legs and found out that it has a 60 day halflife! That stuff stays in your system for a long time! It also made me a bear to be around, so it was hard on my relationship.

I finally chucked them all and went without and it was like the clouds parted from my vision and I was able to see clearly again. I guess I was one of the people that didn't really need it.

My opinion on it all is this, do your best to stay off the drugs, meditate with healing intent, and try to keep involved in something to keep your mind busy. Whatever you decide, I wish you well and hope for the best for you.

Hi bdomihizayka,

It is good that you ask these questions.

There is an EXCELLENT documentary film entitled: "Making a Killing: The Untold Story of Psychotropic Drugging"

You absolutely MUST watch this documentary film.
The film is available on Youtube. It is posted there multiple times. Just search for it by title.

To help you out, I will embed one of the Youtube videos here below.

The above documentary film explains how "psychotropic drugging" is BIG BUSINESS,
and how many of these drugs do more harm than good.

Regards

Setup a daily routine and follow it.
Eat good healthy food that you enjoy.
Stay away from alcohol, caffeine, smoking and drugs.
Exercise, but not too hard!
Go out and enjoy nature, away from people and traffic!
Stay away from TV, radio and computers.
Try to avoid things that are stressful for you.
Lay down and try to think about nothing for a few hours a day (do not fall asleep)

See if that helps you, and give it some time, if not, "they" are always happy to sell you lots of meds

Thank you everyone for the input thus far. I am a paranoid nutjob about big brother and many issues and thus I am a proud member of this forum :-P BUT I am suffering to the point where I am actually starting to be depressed because I feel little to no control of my thoughts sometimes, I'm speaking intrusive, WAKE/ RISE obsessive thoughts where I have even contemplated suicide very recently because my quality of life is dropping because of them.

But everyone seems to vilainize these drugs so badly that I am stuck as of what to do.I'm just really scared; I have been to therapists all my life, and like I said tried everything.

I guess the people that bash these drugs entirely are the people who are fortunate enough to have a completely healthy or ar least controllable mind.

By the way I do meditate and I study mindfullness, Buddhism, Dr. John Sarno and his theories.... etc. I eat great, workout, lift weights, run, sleep well, etc etc etc etc etc etc.... there is just something wrong with my brain where I have very intrusive disturbing thoughts that are uncontrollable and becoming completely debilitating. I don't know how much longer I can stand this.
