Will check the depth settings.

However, they were the same for Japan as they were for the other locations. Yet Japan showed a far different picture.

Are you comparing Sub Duction Zones with Sub Duction Zones? or Sub Duction Zones with Strike Slip?
Could make a difference, if they all shallow then there won't be much depth to the 3D view, look for the length of the vertical U-D like.
Try comparing Japan with say Chile

Christchurch 7D update
I've added Port Hills series (the one that destroyed the city in Feb 2011).
While looking at the IRIS 3D its hard to keep your bearings when you go underground and spin around as the horizon is just a flat line, so I have added some reference points ( town names) to the images to help understand which way you are looking.
Thats a fault with the program, I bet its even worse when there is no coast line.

keep referring to post title which is the link to the page I'm talking about

Philippines 7.2 Depth 30 Km

Right in the middle of one of the islands. Central Visayas

No Tsunami expected.

Not in a good place, I would expect casualties.

Followed by a 5.4 and a 5.3

No link so it didn't happen !

however there was a 7.0 in Mindanao, Philippines

confirmed by IRIS graph of it (good for 17 days unless someone downloads and saves it, which I probably will do tomorrow when the rest of the aftershock have come in)

geez I miss the LISS-Live Internet Seismic Server, but it would have probably looked like that (in black and white)

hisz.rsoe.hu...

Seems not many like RSOE EDIS but I don't mind it

Info source was EMSC

As for it didn't happen, tell that to the locals. At this time of year and at that depth this could cause untold damage including some very large mud slides.

LOL, I guess what jumped right out at me isn't as obvious to everyone else. I wasn't referring to your data, I actually meant something a little less eye-catching than that. It seems the new ATS glitched a little, check out your edit info again:

I dunno, Muzzy. I just look at the pretty pictures. LOL.

I don't change any settings when I go from area to area. So, probably I'm mixing and not matching per se.

OK.

Thx thx for your kind replies and help for so many of us hereon.

Oh yeah.
I seen that big number and thought it was some kind of code for the date, I hadn't noticed other editors had the old dd/hh format.
Notice all the dates on the Avatars are like that too.

So whats it like back there in the year 2013?, probably much the same as it is in 15/10/1,000,000,028,628,610 ( a thousand trillon years and some)

The quake that struck at 8:12 am local time, most likely was caused by the vertical movement of the East Bohol Fault.
At least 28 people died in the quake and more than 33 people were injured.
110 aftershocks were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) three hours after a magnitude-7.2

Intensity VII – Tagbilaran, Bohol
Intensity VI – Inigaran, Negros Occidental
Intensity V – Iloilo City, La Carlota
Intensity IV – Masbate City, Roxas City, San Jose, Culasi, Antique, Guihulngan Negros Oriental
Intensity III – Davao City

Situation looks scary, looks like there is still tension. Too many strong afterquakes. There was 3 5.5-5.9 mag quakes in 6 minutes. The Philippine Sea Plate is moving fast towards northwest, about 84 mm/y. Its going under the Sunda Plate, which is moving 14 mm/y to east.

Hope the situation calms soon, the plate tectonics there can be really dangerous, the area is full of minor plates.

I do not like the swarm in California much. I can't remember this much activity over such a short time. One after another! A whole series in an almost straight line. Worrying it is. May the force preserve us.

Just for fun, it looks like it is 'the other side of the plate' from the Philippines quakes. Probably just the way i look at things.

Sad to see and hear that, the good news is that probably a bigger one will not occur,at least for the moment.

This is what happens when Mother Nature displays Her awesome power. I wonder sometimes if she is even aware of us mere humans. If she is, she may well fear us. We have the capacity to destroy all life on this world, although to Her it may just be a temporary setback that takes a short few thousand years to fix.

It is sad to see the deaths, the numbers will grow as more remote locations get through after failed communication networks are repaired. Sad, but on the other hand, a shallow quake of this magnitude could have been much worse in just the wrong place.

Makes me ponder how fragile life is in the grand scheme of existence.

The location of this little blip of activity is a bit concerning, as it is only a few kms from California's largest reservoir (holding 4.79 million cubic meters), Shasta Dam.

Let's hope these small quakes aren't a prelude to stronger shaking-- that could be a flood of disasterous proportions.
