here's one pic...there's many more

search the image site for Iapetus, and prepare for the unexpected.

its almost as if the "moon" turns on and off.

completely baffled.

I know a lot of the images are overexposed, but that notwithstanding, take a look at this perplexing moon.

This is the link for the image browser. look at both the wide and narrow angle images for Iapetus...selecting most recent.

I believe thats because one face of Iapetus is non-reflective.

so, NASA is deliberately overexposing the images to try and capture detail on the "dark material" side?

Yeah, one part of surface has very high albedo while other parts have very small.

Arthur C. Clarke had Iapetus as the location of the alien stargate in the original novel The Sentinel which was made into 2001. It is still a target for planetary SETI; fascinating object.
