i was reading online but as far as i can see it, it is to slow down and help reverse the aging process, maybe over time we could live over 200 to 300 years then the normal 100 year life span ?

what do you people think ?

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Scientists in Hong Kong appear to have mapped out a formula that can delay the aging process in mice, a discovery they hope to replicate in people. Their finding, published in the December issue of Cell Metabolism, builds on their work in 2005 which shed light on premature aging, or progeria, a rare genetic disease that affects one in four million babies. Progeria is obvious in the appearance of a child before it is a year old. Although their mental faculties are normal, they stop growing, lose body fat and suffer from wrinkled skin and hair loss. Like old people, they suffer stiff joints and a buildup of plaque in arteries which can lead to heart disease and stroke. Most die before they are 20 years old. In that research, the team at the University of Hong Kong found that a mutation in the Lamin A protein, which lines the nucleus in human cells, disrupted the repair process in cells, thus resulting in accelerated aging. Conversely, in their latest work using both mice and experiments in petri dishes, they found that normal and healthy Lamin A binds to and activates the gene SIRT1, which experts have long associated with longevity. "We can develop drugs that mimic Lamin A or increase the binding between Lamin A and SIRT1," Liu Baohua, research assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Hong Kong, told a news conference on Thursday. The team went further to see if the binding efficiency between Lamin A and SIRTI would be boosted with resveratrol, a compound found in the skin of red grapes and other fruits which has been touted by some scientists and companies as a way to slow aging or remain healthy as people get older. Associate professor Zhou Zhongjun, who led the study, said healthy mice fed with concentrated resveratrol fared significantly better than healthy mice not given the compound. "We actually delayed the onset of aging and extended the healthy lifespan," Zhou said of the mice. Mice with progeria lived 30 percent longer when fed with resveratrol compared with progerial mice not given the compound. Asked if their study supported the notion that drinking red wine delays aging and reduces the risk of heart disease, Zhou said the alcohol content in wine would cause harm before any benefit could be derived. "The amount of resveratrol in red wine is very low and it may not be beneficial. But the alcohol will cause damage to the body," Zhou said. (Reporting by Tan Ee Lyn; Editing by Robert Birsel)

I find that absolutely fascinating, but I'm also surprised by the lack of media attention.

I'm from Hong Kong. I've done a news search on Google and Yahoo!. It seems that the only local source that has mentioned it is the local tabloid Oriental Daily. The other sources are Reuters and AFP. That just comes to so how many local sources are interested in this kind of discoveries.

i feel the same about it, it should be made more public and the researchers should get the respect they deserve

I think that 100 years is not a normal life span.

the way every treatment responds to mice, they'll take over the world.

so far, according to scientists, mice have withstood, responded or been treated for every major disease, illness and deficiency known to man and overcome it.

they have been given medicine to improve memory, intelligence, speed, agility, weight, strength, muscle degeneration, metabolism, nerve damage, limb regeneration, size, drug tolerance, enhanced super immune systems, and now a 300 year life span.

well, here's the next president of the united states in a cynical and obvious photo op promoting healthy living.

Reservatrol is very good stuff but it is poorly absorbed, you simply could not drink enough red wine to do any good. But you can get it in lipsomal technology form which is quickly absorbed. I know i am 77 and it has helped me immensely. I buy it from www.letstalkhealth.com Dr. Donsbaugh is the founder
Check out his site

Long life will be a great thing. Unfortunatley the corporations of america have already got life insurance behind the backs of their own workers...

Theres not a doubt in my mind that folks like Mitt Romney would rather find a way to kill you and collect. Hopefully the economy gets destroyed before they can.

Cool stuff, may I also suggest Googling "Telomere research", it too may be the secret to Methuselah style living!

We who?

I guarantee if this ever came to be, it would only be for the rich and powerful. With our population already reaching a dangerous point, having the general population live 300 years is simply suicide.

You wouldn't ever see a 300 year old homeless man on the streets, that's for sure.

Although I get your point, and somewhat agree with it, it was stated somewhere by the lot that are doing the telomere research that basic human rights would allow the treatment to be available to everybody.

I know what the law says and what happens are two different things mind.

This is certainly great news! Maybe in the next few years we'll discover a way to live 50 years longer.

The only problem is people that want to have a big family, but maybe the people who get this will have to sign a contract to not have more than two-three kids.

I have a cat so I will definitely give this to her, when it is available, and if it is safe to give it to her.
