District isolated after anthrax outbreak
Indonesian authorities have ordered the isolation of a district south of Jakarta after six people died from eating goat meat infected with anthrax,
say officials.
"The (Agriculture) Minister ordered that Babakan Madang be put under isolation with no livestock allowed to leave or enter the area," said an
Agriculture Ministry spokesman, Hari Priyono.
Six people, including five members of one family, died after eating the innards of an infected goat on October 15. Eight other people are still in
hospital recovering from the disease.
Mr Priyono said that all livestock in the Babakan Madang subdistrict would be vaccinated and any animal showing symptoms of infection would be
destroyed.
The Government, he said, would compensate farmers for any killed animal.

Although anthrax is endemic in parts of Indonesia it is worth bearing in mind that the Soviet Union tried to cover up the BW anthrax manufacturing
accident at Sverdlosk in the early eighties, by claiming that those affected had caught the disease by eating infected meat.
