Yes, indeed.
This is precisely what I nicknamed the "day has arrived" syndrome on a thread of my own.
That is to say, I had noticed on previous "predicted" days that the believers had vanished from the board once the day had dawned, not even waiting for the end of the day to be certain.
I commented that in the case of "2012" the phenomenon seemd to have begun early.
So you've noticed it too, which proves my point about the existence of the pattern.

If instead of wasting precious time and energy dwelling on speculative doomsday fantasies, we all spent a little more time helping with a specific, concrete cause that would improve things on this planet - such as donating some $$$ to your favorite charity, volunteering with a local non-profit or the Red Cross to help unfortunate people in your community, biking to work instead of driving and burning gas, insulating your windows and doors to avoid wasting so much energy on heat/AC, etc, it would probably help to fend off the "end of the world" quite a bit.

Not that I've always been the best about doing this myself... But instead of worrying and speculating so much about things that are outside of our control, IMHO we should be taking actions to help with things where we can actually make a difference.

I can proudly state that I've done all of those things many times. Used to bike a 30 - 40 mile roundtrip on my 10 speed at dawn a couple days a week to go to school. I think if everyone did such things we'd all get along much better, too. And maybe we'd have the proper social nets to prevent cult-like belief. I think it's a long time before that happens though - I kid you not when I say one morning a family of obese folks were blatantly laughing at me going uphill on my bike as they went by in an SUV. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.

Instead of our usual gifts, this holiday season my wife and I are giving family and friends cards showing that we donated to different charities in their name. We thought this was much better than giving material gifts to people who already had pretty much everything they need.

It will be interesting to see how well received they are - but I have no regrets!

Shame on you, guys. At least when organized religions get their doomsday predicitions wrong they stick by the prediction and move the date.

I think you left out a few other scenarios but i must say this is an excellent list which seems to encompass a huge amount of threads from numerous forums occurring all throughout the history of ATS!

Perthaps if we add enough possibilities then surely one may be interpreted as actually happening.

People die everyday and for them the world has ended and the same will happen on 12/21/12 as it happens every single day. Death is part of life and is a certainty the moment we are conceived and we should be ready for it at any time. The only reason people fear death is because of our addiction to everything material which is the root of most problems faced by humanity. Stop worrying about a particular date and live every moment as it happens. Knowing whether the world will end or not is meaningless.

That's a wonderful idea. I think I'll do that next year! Plus I'll feel a whole lot awkward telling people that then giving them a gift they half-like. Haha.

The name of your thread gave me an idea to create a parody of that old fashioned poem.
So here's my gift to you all. It's sort of a rough draft; I wanted to add more doomsday memes, but I kinda like it.


'Twas the Night before Doomsday (by Mara Grace)

Twas the night before Solstice, the new agers dowse
Precession of equinox through a new astrological house.
Threads about doomsday were created with care,
In hopes that Hercolubus soon would be there.

Children of Annunaki await their planet in red,
While visions of apocalypse danced in their heads.
Grabbed my compass and telescope and celestial maps,
Boggling my mind, I prepared for extreme solar zaps.

When out from CERN there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was dark matter.
Looking out the window I saw a huge flash,
It tore open the skies and rained down cosmic ash.

The moon was just blasted by probes Ebb and Flow,
As I thought to myself just how apropos.
When, just as my brain cranked in to high gear,
I saw a gigantic asteroid appear and coming near!

Well I'm a survivor, so what was this shtick?
I knew in a moment the meteor must be quite thick.
Faster than fallen angels fleeing from shame,
We whistled and shouted as we saw shooting flames!

"Now Mercury! now, Venus! now, Earth is missing!
A Comet! A planetoid! Some abomination of fission!
To the top of the mountains! to the caves we crawl!

As hot cinders that before the super-volcano fly,
When a Carrington event happens, Earth is to fry.
Higher than the house-top the tidal wave grew,
With the air full of noise, and Nibiru too!

Without an inkling, I thought it was a spoof,

As I threw up my arms, my head spinning around,
Down came an alien, beamed to the ground.

The least of my worries was my home being foreclosed,
Radioactive waste takes far too long to decompose!

He rose to his ship, to his team gave a whistle,
Pushed a button to disarm all our military missiles.
But I heard him exclaim, that it is our own inner light,
Will redeem us in the end, then he flew out of sight!

pre-emptively labeling anything that may happen as pranks, crazies acting out,and

Well..."Apocalypses" literally means "the unveiling"...it doesn't mean "Armageddon"...big difference.

There will be no doom and I doubt any "unveiling" will take place...though it's possible. An "apocalypse" could be a new scientific, medical or technological discovery...it could be A.I. It could be any information coming out that we didn't have before...

I will be working and do what I do every other day on Friday...though I may have my coffee outside to watch the sun rise...supposed to be in the upper 30's here so won't be too cold. The winter Solstice arrives here at 6:12 am and sunrise is around 7:29 or so...
