My Toshiba Thrive is having major issues staying connected to this site for the last week and a half. My routine has been (for a year now) to go to bed and grab my Thrive and peruse the threads here on ATS until I doze off to sleep. Heck, it's one of my favorite parts of the day! But starting about a week ago anytime I select a thread to view within 30 seconds my browser closes and I'm back to the Android desktop.

BUT! If I select the "Hottest Topic Right Now" from the "Forums" page I can read to my hearts content. That is until I select another thread from within a particular forum. Then 30 seconds later (sometimes as little as 4-5 seconds) Whammo....the browser closes and I'm staring at the desktop.

Scenario goes like this;

I select the shortcut from my desktop. This shortcut takes me to the "Forums" page. If I select the "Hottest Topic" thread I can read without any issues. If however I select my favorite forum (Science and Technology) then select a thread (I must select a thread otherwise it never messes up) my browser will close in 5-30 seconds. If I select any thread in any other forum from the page the same thing happens.

I thought maybe it was the shortcut. I manually typed in the browser the address and came to our new (hate it lol) home page. I perused the threads there and read one without issue. I thought to myself maybe there is an issue with Android and the link? So I went to the "Forums" page. Selected Science and Technology, chose a thread and 20 seconds later my browser closes.

The tablet is up to date with Android. No updates are pending. I don't know if it's an issue with only my tablet device or if others have had this problem. I have no issues using my Windows Phone or any pc.

I select the shortcut from my desktop

Its a trillion rules on this... site. Maybe using the ‘short cut’ option is one of them.

I thought it was just me. My smartphone does the same thing. I'll be reading a thread (or trying to), and it'll be mostly loaded, and suddenly I'm on the desktop and my browser is closed. I tried clearing the database to see if that helps, but it hasn't. It only started in the last few days.

Same thing on my Android tablet. Last night ats wouldn't load at all, unless I went to ats twitter page and clicked on those topics, but if I tried to go to recent posts or my bookmark of the fragile earth forum it'd time out, this wad on my wifi - isthisthingon said it was just me though, feels better to know its not! All other websites were working correctly, just ats wasn't. Its working now on my 4g connection, but probably still not on my Wifi

That precisely what mine is doing. In fact, last night I was watching the "load" bar at the top of the page. It would get 90% loaded then CTD (don't know if I would call it an actual crash, but it fits). I think the only reason that I can stay on a thread longer is sometime it takes longer to load.

Hmm, so maybe a WiFi problem with Android devices? I wonder if Zaphod was using WiFi or his cell connection? Sadly I can't test it as my tablet only has WiFi. My Windows phone works great but the screen is too small and on the odd occasion that I want to reply to a post the keyboard is way to small for my long-wided replies.
And the only Android device I own is the tablet.

Whatever it is I hope we can illicit some help from a computer guru so we can figure this thing out. I'm to the point now that I'm thinking about re-setting my tablet back to factory settings.

I was on my cell connection. I only use our wifi for the laptop. I use the cell when I'm inside somewhere, or while we're going down the road if I just want to do a drive by on the forums.

See if you can change your browser - that's the most likely cause. If it's Google Chrome, the silent updates are known to break web pages. There's a history of Chrome doing this - see if you can download FF mobile, or Opera, or Safari, or IE, or any other of the myriad of browsers out there.

Edit: I use iOS and have not had this issue, but I'm aware of it.

Another edit: You're all on some version of Chrome - yeah ditch it until Google applies a new update.

That was it! Thanks a ton, dont know why i didnt think of that....i suppose because all the other websites i visit worked fine. Although that isnt saying much as this site is by far the most visited one on this device. I'm actually replying on my tablet.

Thanks again Jason!

Glad to help.
At some point Chrome will update again and you can go back - but Google often buries that info.

Glad you got it working. I was going to suggest a new browser to try, free from the Google Playstore:
Try Opera Mini, or Dolphin. (Both are awesome, in fact, install both!) I prefer Opera, but that's just me.

Stock Android browsers are rather crappy. Kinda like Windoze with IE.

I got a question that may be related.
Or maybe not.

My wife got an email stating that I was close to using up all of my part of the family data plan .
I look at ATS maybe 3 times a week on my phone .It's to damn small to really search or anything.
And it's a sizable family plan.

I need to look into the details on it.

Maybe something to do with this......

pocketnow.com...

I must be butt dialing podcasts or something.

I installed FireFox as that's what I use on my Windows machine but I will take a look at the other two. I'll pick my favorite from all three :p
