China begins air ops with Liaoning

Chinese television has released video of the first air operations onboard the Liaoning aircraft carrier. The landings and take offs were made using a J-15 aircraft. What's interesting about the J-15 is that not only do the wings fold, but the horizontal stabilizers fold as well. They are still a long long way away from having an operational air wing, but they have started air ops a lot sooner than I thought they would.

The PLA-N was reported to have taken an interest in the Su-27KUB, as it supplements the Su-33 which the PLA-N was to acquire for its embryonic carrier fleet, being formed around the former Russian Project 1143.5 carrier Varyag. Since then the PLA-N disclosed the existence of the J-15 Flanker D, which is a Chinese reverse engineered Su-27K airframe with Chinese systems migrated from the J-11B/BS Sino-Flanker. It is claimed that the template for the J-15 was at least one derelict Su-27K prototype procured in the Ukraine in 2001 and shipped to China for reverse engineering.

They are not yet. They are taking steps in that direction for sure but to challenge US naval power directly they still have years more of development, construction, and training ahead of them.

It's hard to imagine them being ready even 30 years from now. That's if their emergine middle class doesn't revolt.

this vid just puts questions in my head about the new british carrier(s)

the liaoning, has a ski jump, no catapult, 60K ton's(ish), 300m longish and launches conventional fighters

the QE class, has a ski jump, no catapult, 60K ton's(ish) 280+m longish and launches STOVL fighters

now

Why can't we launch F35C's from the british carrier? does that 20m make all the difference? could the launch position not be moved rearwards on the QE if it did? or is there something else? does the F35C not have the performance of the J15 to get airborne even with the ski jump?

The big problem with ski jump carriers is that your fighters are limited in their payload at takeoff. An aircraft launching off a Nimitz, with the catapult can take off at MGTOW, where an aircraft without a catapult can't.

As for the QE, the F-35B SHOULD be able to take off at near max payload (11-15,000 lbs), where a C probably couldn't (15-17,000 lbs).

Its hard for me to believe Chinese media considering their obvious use of Top Gun footage.
