A giant solar prominence erupts from the sun on Nov. 16, 2012, in this image captured by NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory. The solar eruption was not aimed at Earth.

Crazy!! Everything seems to be happening at once.

And somewhere in the Universe a star exploded and ate up all the planets around it.

ZOMG

The end is near...

So I was wondering what the largest flare/cme our sun could produce would be, but I couldn't get any scientists to take a stab. The latest models they use set no upper limit on the injection of magnetic energy into the solar flux tubes, so I suppose it is not possible to estimate, or even guess how big a cme could get.
Looking at other stars similar to our Sun though, it seems the cme can get pretty big.

As of 2000, nine superflare stars have been found, some of them similar to our Sun.[1] The energy released during such a flare is 100 times to 10 million times that of the sun's largest coronal mass ejections.

10 million times??

The flares on our Sun are thousands of times punier than those on similar stars, Kepler observations suggest.

Maybe not enough to eat a planet, but make a real mess of the surface, with a direct hit?

I guess theses eruptions happen from time to time, maybe more common when we get closer to the galactic plane?

What I find amazing is that those flames are like 5 times the size of the earth and that the sun itself isn't even 1/1000th of the biggest stars...

So what's your point ?

Someone can't post interesting cosmic phenomena unless it has doom and gloom attached to it ?

Anyways, thanks for the post OP, that was a massive one... too bad NASA couldn't capture it all on the screen and watch the plasma trail spread out.

Really we could do without the capital letters! Those who watch the Sun were aware of this two days ago. It is hardly hews, or even scary!

They happen

I guess in 30 million years or so I won't be concerned about what happens as we get closer to the Galactic Plane and neither will you.

Dear OP,

Members are biting your head off because of the capital letters in the title that make it LOOK and SOUND like a flare is going to eat the earth up. hence doom and gloom.....perhaps if your thread was titled in a more subtle way.....people genuinely interested in solar flares will come take a look discuss and enjoy.....troll free experience

just my 2 pence,

I think we are mistaken if we think that just because a cme is not directed at earth that they cannot affect us somehow, where does all that energy go? It goes into our solar system, which we are a part of.

That explosion was small compared to the one when the whole sun erupted a few years ago. When that happened it made a strange looking sun, some people I know saw the sun looking weird and my daughter called to see what I knew. I have monitored information on the sun almost every day with spaceweather and space.com for about five years now. I get to find when the auroras and meteor showers are and a lot of other interesting stuff. This eruption didn't impress me that much, when you have seen bigger it makes things like this seem everyday .

Yes but solar flares happen ALL the time, they happened long before you were born, and will continue to happen long after your gone......the slight breeze of wind affects my face.....it feels cold.....but its not going to cause me to freeze to death.....what kind of affect are we looking at here???

Not sure, but I don't pretend to know either. The fact is you don't have a clue if this affects us or not.

As the actress said to the Bishop. Oh wait, you said ERUPTION.

Yes not a big one as eruptions go.

Well what I find interesting is that so many times they have said that an active region is turning towards earth and we better prepare. All it does is fizzle once it faces the earth. Why is that? Why does the sun pop off huge flares when the earth is in the 'safe' zone? I don't have specific examples of this, but it happens and if someone wants them i will look but there are others far more savoy in this than I. Just wondering and throwing it out there; is the sun shooting out at something that we can't see? Is the electric universe something to consider?

As we approach solar maximum in 2013 we should expect an increase in solar activity.Sunspot AR1619 has grown rapidly and is now three times as wide as the earth(not a really big sunspot but worth watching over the next few days). Thankfully this last event was not Earth directed because these kinds of solar eruptions could be very damaging to our current technology.I would not be surprised at all if some part of our planet experienced some sort of disruption to it's electrical grid during the next 12-18 months.Good job and thanks for the excellent post!

Yes It's sending energy to the black hole just next to the sun, that is going to split the timelines into two, on 21.12.12.

It is all under intelligent control, that is why these CMEs fizzle out when it turns towards the Earth.

The black hole will look like a second sun when it really gets going, what do you think the chemtrails are for-they are to stop the Gamma radiation and X-ray radiation from the black hole. Barium sulphate I think (Its late and my brain is tired.)

And yes, I know this is the Space exploration forum.
And yes, there are photos but you wouldn't believe me, even if I knew how to download them and if I did ATS would disappear from the internet. So I am not going to, as I like ATS.

Your joking aren't you?

yes, this is a space exploration forum, not a space cadet forum. Where is this blackhole you keep referring to?
