USGS

Event Time

2012-11-16 18:12:37 UTC
2012-11-17 04:12:37 UTC+10:00 at epicenter
2012-11-16 12:12:37 UTC-06:00 system time

Location

49.291°N 155.445°E depth=4.9km (3.0mi)
Nearby Cities

161km (100mi) SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia
454km (282mi) SSW of Vilyuchinsk, Russia
473km (294mi) SSW of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia
479km (298mi) SSW of Yelizovo, Russia
1981km (1231mi) NE of Tokyo, Japan

Looks like the pacific rim is giving the Russians a little jolt. Add this to what's happening in the Middle East and it seems like all hell is breaking loose. What is bothersome about this one is that it's along the coast. No Tsunami warning issued at the moment: www.hawaii247.com...

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.8 struck today near the Kuril Islands, a remote archipelago between Russia's Far East and Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). www.livescience.com...

Right after Putin said Russia would back Egypt against Israel. Hmmm.

Yes I see we both posted this same report at the same time, I am concerned as I have never seen earth so disturbed as earth is now, odd really.

If you think that's bothersome (and yes it is, to a degree), consider how many mag six or bigger quakes there have been up and down the western coast of the Americas in the past few weeks. I've been observing this for some years now and there have been more than I can ever recall seeing in such a realtively short time, along such an extended length of coastline.

The western side of the Pacific plate region has been so active that it doesn't surprise me much to see this quake pop up on the NE side in the Kurils.

EDIT: very unlikely to get much of a tsunami from that quake. It's big, but not huge. It might cause some local, realtovely small waves but that's about it.

Guys isn't Russia an earthquake free area? Isn't Russia on one tectonic plate? Things are getting weird...

That region is part of Russian territory but please note it's not within the middle of Russia somewhere.
It's in a quite active seismic zone and they have had some pretty decent sized quakes there over the years. There are some active volcanoes up there as well, probably being influenced by the subduction zone that runs right along there and up around past Alaska. (And down towards Japan the other way.)

EDIT: Here on eathquaketrack (dot) com you can see recent quakes in the Kuril Islands region. There's been 192 quakes in that region in the past year. (Today's happens to be the biggest, but they've had even bigger ones in the past -- over magnitude 8, in fact.

Interesting that. I need to look into this further.

not so much the magnitude that is alarming but the depth, with a shallow depth like that a tsunami is a big worry.

Thank you I like how you put that into perspective over the years. Let me know what else you find when your done looking into that.

Isn't that one of the most remote and unpopulated areas of Russia? Hardly a target for retaliation. Considering it's on the ring of fire there is nothing surprising about it.

That is almost straight across the Pacific from where I am in Washington. I am shocked we have not had a decent sized EQ with all the activity in the last few years.

6.1 just hit Tonga. All around the pacific rim seems to be mid 6 pointers over the last couple weeks.

EDIT: Just as I left this and went back to the earthquake map a 5.0 hit Fiji.
edit on 16-11-2012 by bronco73 because: add another quake

DISASTERS
Relating to Israel's Covenant Land

Some disasters appear to be related to God's promise to bless those who bless Israel but curse those who slight Israel .

October 30, 1991

As President George Bush, Sr. is opening the Madrid Conference to consider "Land for Peace" in Israel's Middle East role, the "Perfect Storm" develops in the North Atlantic, creating the largest waves ever recorded in that region. The storm travels 1,000 miles from East to West (instead of the normal West to East pattern) and crashes into the New England coast. Thirty five foot waves crash into the Kennebunkport home of President Bush.

I wonder what God would say to those that Israel reproaches who have never wished any harm on Israel (except in self defense). Does God expect people to just take Israel's attacks on them without defending themselves? Doesn't make sense does it?
