Why does God need a name?

Perhaps you believe that if we don't know his name he won't recognise it when we speak to him?

Al-Mumit = The Destroyer, The Bringer of Death

Ad-Darr = The Distressor, The Harmer, The Afflictor

god is good and bad.

I think you may have it backwards. A name is a word by which one is known. These 99 names do an excellent job of making "Allah's" qualities known.
