A video news release (VNR) is a video segment made to look like a news report, but is instead created by a PR firm, advertising agency, marketing firm, corporation, or government agency. They are provided to television newsrooms to shape public opinion, promote commercial products and services, publicize individuals, or support other interests. News producers may air VNRs, in whole or in part, at their discretion or incorporate them into news reports if they contain information appropriate to a story or of interest to viewers.

Critics of VNRs have called the practice deceptive or a propaganda technique, particularly when the segment is not identified to the viewers as a VNR. Firms producing VNRs disagree and equate their use to a press release in video form and point to the fact that editorial judgement in the worthiness, part or whole, of a VNR's content is still left in the hands of Journalists, Program Producers or the like. The United States Federal Communications Commission is currently investigating the practice of VNRs.

There is also another name for this technique its called Satellite Media Tours.

Satellite Media Tours (SMTs) are where a PR company organises a series of one-on-one interviews with television reporters.

Medialink described SMT's in its 2005 Annual Report as commonly comprising "Satellite media tours consist of a sequence of one-on-one satellite interviews with a series of pre-booked television reporters across the country or around the world. Satellite media tours typically involve an interview with an author, performer, executive or other spokesperson promoting an upcoming event, product, movie or book release."[1] (Pdf). In its 2003 Annual Report it stated that "SMTs generally are conducted from a studio but can originate from remote locations and may be aired live by the television station or recorded for a later airing."

The format of one on one interviews is commonly preferred within the PR industry as an alternative to a media conference. The radio equivalent of SMT's are referred to as Radio Media Tours (RMT's).

Gourvitz Communications, a New York city VNR producer, stated on its website in 2006 that a "three hour, two camera satellite press tour produced in a studio will cost between $22,000 - $25,000 depending on the length of the tour, and a remote tour produced using a satellite uplink truck will cost around $38,000."

It is quite fascinating that these are watched by millions and no one ever asks who, why , what and where. Many of these most watched clips are actually read by publicists and not actual news anchors. Many today even take their medical advice based on these so called informative news clips.

This type of bombardment should actually be seen as criminal. With all that these people are involved in there seems to only be one way to avoid it...

That is with the knowledge that is presented here. We can stop them by knowing where they are, and what they are peddling!!

Everytime I write something like this, something that can really get to the root of a particular problem, it makes it easier to realize that there are more factors that come into play when we think about those that are less "informed". Its not the information that is the problem, its where they are getting it.

I refresh ATS and still see people disputing where and when with the same arguments over and over again. Without anyone trying to look through the clouds and see the clear sky of truth. I sometimes wonder why I bother to actually take the time to write these things, as I know that very few are interested, as this type of info can actually stop people in their tracks.

While people are arguing over the good guys and the bad guys, it seems that we are really arguing over the bad guys and the worse guys.

This is a wake up call, and should at least be seen in a way that when we are disussing things with outhers out there we are fully aware where they got their info from in the first place.

"Hey I saw a new clip last night about the new flu shots, Im so glad I stayed up to watch the news at 10pm".

"Well why dont we type in VNR, and find out who is telling you this, and see how you feel about it".
