How can a trained military jet pilot 'miss' a prop driven unarmed drone?
We shot down drones when I was in the military for target practice with RedEye missiles, and those drones were much smaller.
Shot across the bow intimidation or harassment I would guess, unless they need glasses.

Haha, I love the manipulative wording.
Naughty Iranian's aggressively shooting down our instruments of war!
As for them knowing, they would only know if they flew past it, and got a good look at it. The Hellfires that it carries would be obvious, since they hang below the wings. If they just flew at it, and opened fire, then no, they wouldn't know until they passed it at least once, or closed in on it.

Iran doesn't want war, but isn't this an act of aggression?
President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta were both advised early on about the unprecedented incident, which occurred at about 4:50 am ET (0850 GMT) on Nov. 1.
PENTAGON CONFIRMS: IRAN FIRED ON U.S. DRONE LAST WEEK
Initially, the Obama administration did not disclose the information — an act that some may question, especially considering the proximity of the event to the 2012 presidential election. However, prior to the Pentagon’s confirmation, two officials went off-the-record to describe the Iranian action to CNN.

WHAT will Barry-O do?
The incident occurred on Nov. 1 — just days before the presidential election — but the Obama White House did not disclose the incident. Three senior officials have confirmed the details to CNN. The officials declined to be identified because it involved sensitive intelligence issues, CNN reports. Read Latest Breaking News from Newsmax.com: www.newsmax.com...
