I just heard about this on the local news this morning.

www.cbsnews.com...

Why were the news stations not reporting on this BEFORE the elections? Is this just par for the course in Detroit?

Banks, 35, was convicted eight times between 1998 and 2004 of writing bad checks and credit card fraud. His slogan was "You can Bank on Banks."

Ironic, no?

Yeah, lets bailout Detroit. Great idea!

I read this too. Look basically they elected someone to represent Detroit who is just like everyone else in Detroit. A criminal. I know it's a large generalization but if you examine the citizens there closely you'll find it's true.

So what?, Just because someone wrote some checks or used a credit card beyond its limit, (not even crimes in the UK) 8 years ago, doesn't mean to say he is the same person now.
So nice to see the spirit of forgiveness at work.

You obviously misread, he was convicted on 8 DIFFERENT occasions within a 6 year period. More than just writing "some checks" or overspending on a credit card...

Thank you!
And I guess the part I don't really understand is, you can't vote if you have a felony, correct?
But you can run for office?
How does that make any sense?

Consider the constituency.

In some places being a bible thumping bigot gets you elected.
In others being a repeat felon and con man gets you elected.
In still others being a crack head gets you elected, Marion Barry.

Even thieves, bigots and crack heads have leaders.

It's not that I have anything personal against this person.
I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but Detroit has had,or still is one of the most corrupt governments of any town in Michigan, to the point they have made national news in the past. This certainly does not help that image at all.
Even the newscasters were making jokes about this.

And again, If you can't vote, because you are a felon, why should you be able to run for office????

It is a "partial" myth that you can't vote after a conviction of a felony. I think it's a hangover from the untruths being spread recently in an attempt to disenfranchise as many voters as possible.

Anyway, what I mean by a "partial" myth is that it's not always true. Some states allow convicted felons to vote after they've served their time (including any probation). Also, some felons go through the (legal) process of having their rights restored.

Thanks for that.

I just went and did some digging.
www.michigan.gov...

So in Michigan, If you are in Jail, awaiting Trial, you can vote.
If you are in jail, after being convicted, you cannot vote
When you are released you can again vote.

Well, I hope for this fellows sake, he really has changed.
Unfortunately, given the past history of officials in the Detroit area, the odds are against it.

Detroit is a corpse of a city.
You were expecting hummingbirds instead of vultures?
It is a very sad commentary on America and what used to be one of our finest cities.
Yes, America: this can happen anywhere. Maybe your town is next?

I guess it is just wishful thinking that people would wake up and want Detroit to turn around.

Honestly, I don't ever go there anymore. Or near it.
Redwings aren't playing.
