With an 800-kilometre (500 mile) radius of powerful winds, Tokage is the 10th typhoon to make landfall in Japan this year, and the strongest to hit Japan for nearly two decades.
More than 150 people have died so far this season, which has seen a record number of typhoons hit the Japanese mainland.
Parts of southern Japan, especially in Miyazaki prefecture, have been virtually shut down because of the typhoon.
By 2200 local time (1300 GMT) Tokage was located near Ida, about 170 km west of Tokyo.
