Amelia Carolina Sparavigna, the researcher who discovered the bizarre patterns, says they are evidence of a comprehensive geological survey, including
the widespread digging of trenches and boreholes to map the extent of the ore. The amateur archeologist made the discovery of an 8km long line of
squares in the desert just south of the town of Ruoqiang using Google Earth satellite images. If she is right, this part of China seems set to become
an important centre for mining.
