I noticed people rate the frequency of earthquakes we get by the number of posts or news headlines they read, but the truth is 2012 has been one of the quietest years for earthquakes.

Sorry this is not a doom and gloom thread and before I read another post saying "OMG we are getting so many earthquakes lately" lets look at some facts.

Below is a link to a chart of all 5.0-9.9 earthquakes since 2000 and it looks like in 2012 we had the least amount of 6.0-6.9 earthquakes in over a decade. I know we still have 2 months to go, but if you annualize the 2012 6.0-6.9 earthquakes you will get 109 earthquakes, the next lowest would be 2001 with 121 earthquakes. So this make 2012 the year with the least amount of 6.0-6.9 earthquakes. As far as other magnitudes, 5.0-5.9 we are about 200 below average, the average is 1655 and we are at 1455(annualized). For magnitudes 7-9.9 were are right at average. And the combined total number of earthquakes magnitude 5.0-9.9, average is 1819 and right now we are at 1579(annualized) so we are 240 average.

en.wikipedia.org...

I bet if we took 20 ATS members and have them start posting new earthquake threads, people would think the we are getting a lot of earthquakes. This is also how the MSM works, if they want the public to have a certain perception of something, they just fill the networks with that information and people buy into it. A perfect example of this is why Romney is winning the presidential race over Ron Paul, even though Ron Paul had a lot more intentions to help the 99%ers and Romney's main concern is the 1%ers that helped sponsor his campaign. Romney stated that he pretty much doesn't care for 47% of the population, even though it's probably closer 99% of the population and look how far he got. I see Romney/Ryan bumper stickers almost everyday on the cars of people who probably fall into the 47% that Romney doesn't give a crap about... this just shows you how brainwashed people are by the MSM.

Just wanted to point out some facts.

Thanks for posting this; the link you provided gives lots of informed information on FAQs about earthquakes. "Increased earthquake awareness" doesn't mean "increased earthquake occurrence".

There is always someone who will say "OMG we are getting a lot of earthquakes, adn your point about getting 20 people to post earthquakes is good. I had not considered that aspect.

As far as the number go this year, yup it has been a very quiet year. Mag 6 are way down and to be honest I don't go along with Mag 7+ being average. Mag 7 to 7.99 are definitely under average based on the last decade at least. It is difficult to give an average for Mag 8+ as they don't happen every year.

My feeling is, and I have NOT checked this yet, is that although the number are down the magnitudes are slightly up.

At roughly 750 petajoules it is NOT a busy year so far and the 2 x Mag 8 account for virtually all of that.

I had estimated 600 PJ so I am out, but I had only estimated 1 x Mag 8. I thought 16 Mag 7 so at present we are way under, and I estimated 120 Mag 6 and I think we may be under that.

Good to know. Let's hope it's not just the proverbial quiet before the storm....
Specially considering the latest news on those strange atmospheric sounds...
Maybe HAARP has been a victim of budget cuts?

Regarding the disparity between the hype and the numbers, don't forget media coverage is often focused on spectacle. In other words, televised earthquakes tend to be the more dramatic destructive ones. And there's not an exact correlation between frequency, magnitude, and casualties. A record-low year in frequency, can be a record-high in death toll. Unfortunately the site provided can't answer that question. I'll see if i can find better data.
As an example, in the link OP provided, there was an 8.2 in Indonesia with 0 casualties and a 5.6 with 81 deaths in China (no info on missing people or property damages though).
If by chance those fewer earthquakes happen in less prepared or more densily populated areas, there's a higher probability MSM becomes flooded with earthquake coverage, giving you the appearance they're becoming more frequent instead of just more damaging. Conclusion: Logic problem on the viewer, not the information.

Both tools of diagnostic on this issue (MSM and official data) can be misleading, depending on the numbers you focus on, or the channels you watch....

Data on global earthquake death toll by year since 1970.
Immediately you can see that although 2011 has been a record year in the last decade on all magnitudes above 5, 2010 had a 1500% higher death toll! 2012 though seems to be a lucky year! Corroborating OP's opinion. Lowest death toll since 1984!

From this site.

Something to ponder:
Graph plotting earthquake frequency since 1973, shows an abrupt increase starting at 1994. A vertiginous slope showing a constant increase up to 2006 (more recent data not included).
Curious date 1994, i was joking about HAARP on my previous post, but considering it started its activity in that year, makes me think there might be little reason to laugh about it..........

From this site. Worth visiting for more detailed info.

Sorry for spamming. Just found this infographic by accident, i thought i would share.
It equates media coverage and hurricane damages. Completely baffling absence of any apparent correlation...
Also shocking to see Katrina so low on the list...
