In Iran, the president is the face for the world, but in the country itself, it's the Supreme Leader that calls the shots.

But is it?

The ultra-conservative and influential Hadjani Circle vehemently oppose many of the reforms introduced by Khamenie.

One thing is certain, it seems as if most of Ahmadinejad's powerful supporters are now cutting all links with him.

Ahamadinejad only has 8 months left of his Presidency - whilst I think he'll probably be allowed to see out his term who knows what will happen if protests continue and who knows which faction will come out on top?

Well stated, and I did read your linked post. It's obvious you've done your homework on the way Iranian politics is structured. A knot of snakes indeed and one not easily untangled.

I wonder if many people in the west actually know how much the average Iranian citizen loves America?

Perhaps if the movie The Iran Job replaced the film Argos in popularity, but I highly doubt it.

What seems strange is that Mashaei has been a close confidante of Ahmadinejad for nearly 30 years now.
During that time Ahamdinejad developed a close relationship with Mesbah Yazdi who was until recently Ahmadinejad's spiritual advisor.
Yet on the face of it Yazdi and Mashaei have quite conflicting views.

But the one thing all three have in common is a deep and unfaltering belief in The Mahdi and his imminent emergence.
And they believe they can speed up and force The Mahdi out into the open by creating discord and chaos.

All Twelvers supposedly believe in The Mahdi - differences centre around whether his return can be enforced and what sort of society / government etc Iran should be in the meantime.

It is rumoured that Yazdi has aspirations to be Iran's next Spiritual Leader whilst it has been suggested that Mashaei is indeed being groomed to make a run for the Iranian Presidency.
