You know what, I think those of you that don't have children are the ones saying how evil and bad this is. Me, I have a 10 year old daughter and I think it is a great idea. I know this is in bad taste and I am going to get flamed here, but I am trying to make a point here.....you probably wouldn't think like you do if THIS was your daughter: abducted kid
Don't get me wrong, I can see your point and agree to an extent, but this is how stuff like mandatory RFID chips are implemented- it is designed to be a good idea at first.
The increasing survelliance state is good in principle- for safety and security- but once they start this tiptoe, they never take steps back, they just keep going until we lose all privacy.
There is a huge difference I think. I see your point, but I disagree. If this were to happen to an adult it would be a whole different monster. BUT as adults are we not responsible for our children? That's what this is about, tracking kids.......not grown arse people.

Evidently they don't teach students about Faraday Cages?
The other thing; oops, I dropped it in some water, and then accidentally stepped on it when I went to pick it up?
It's not like they're forcing people to have them implanted in their bodies.
Were I in charge of the school district and wanted this implemented, I'd simply make it mandatory that all students have an iPhone, Android, or other similar smart phone that has GPS, under some nifty disguise of a lesson plan, or academic app that backdoors to the GPS allowing for the surreptitious lojacking of the students.
No one would give a single peep of dissent if they all had smart phones.
Most of you have one yourself, voluntarily, of your own free will, and any agency for any or no reason at all can spy on you using it.

spying on your kid is not a good idea. My parents spied on me, and I totally resented them for it, and moved to another state. You have to give kids a chance to prove themselves to you.
...
But if kids do have a problem with truancy, then I think a suitable punishment would be to have to wear the ID.
