very good advice.

i also forgot to mention some other techniques which do work for me; it involves training your brain specifically for it

to enhance dream recall and lucidity condition your brain to think the other way around, by counting numbers backwards or even harder learn the alphabet backwards.

like it was said condition your brain to do reality checks, throughout the day ask yourself and check if you are awake or dreaming, i personally do it whenever i open or walk through a doorway, found it to be the best way since it's something everyone experiences frequently.

and i became even more assured there's something to it after reading the study mentioned here to which i can't seem to find a link right now

We’ve all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do. Or get. Or find. New research from University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor Gabriel Radvansky suggests that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses. “Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an ‘event boundary’ in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away,” Radvansky explains. which is funny because since i started questioning my awake status while walking through doorways my lucid abilities have increased greatly, but i do find myself having these memory lapses frequently.

and not only doors seem to have this "event boundary" on me, seems to happen when i have multiple internet tabs open on my browser for varied reasons.

by the way nimbinned, what's your preferred method of starting to fly?
the running/jump style where it feels like invisible steps appear under your feet and propel you up, or the mental focus style where you just blast off into the air straight up?

to me it feels the running method is good to fly "locally" or in your current dream, because the blast off method (which i still don't control quite as good) sometimes makes me not only fly through the dream scenery i'm in but it can also make me change dreams and on occasion reach some very weird places.

the best example i can give is that is similar to what happens when you manage to glitch out of the intended map in a videogame..

I've never tried the running style, it had never occured to me. I'll have to give that a shot.

I used the blast-off method my first time and ended up hitting the ceiling of the warehouse area I was in, caused an instant blackout which I recovered from and found myself back in the warehouse. I was able to control my elevation the second time around but not my speed, I was always flying at a break-neck speed and had to focus on "phasing through" obstacles since I believed they had mass and could knock me out if I hit them.

Another method you could try would be to create a vehicle with controls that you can manipulate to control flight, though this is more complex than simply walking through the air. I did this on a whim in another dream when I was being chased by a faceless police officer (who was pursuing me because I had killed an evil mummy archetype in a sword fight...wierd dream); I summoned a hovering black orb, about the size of those inflatable exercise balls, which had a flight stick and escaped my pursuer.

Good comments Uzi

What's so awesome about the reality check is that it starts to seriously alter your perception of waking reality also. Try it every 5 or 10 minutes all day long and see how you feel at the end of it
It's an absolute trip out. Worlds start to merge. Real and Unreal no longer exist anymore.

Answering your question about the flying thing :- I don't really need a technique, it just comes naturally to me. I usually just float around first for a while getting my bearings, and then I'll chose to get horizontal and fly off superman style - it's easier to view the ground and scenery below that way. It's funny, that even though it's a lucid adventure the subconscious always chimes in all the time with stuff to try and trip you up, like power lines .
