Lake monsters may not be as fashionable as they were when the Deseret News reported on them in the 1870s, but the body of evidence supporting the
existence of the Beast of Bear Lake is overwhelming. The monster had "a body half seal, half serpent, and a head somewhat like a sea lion," wrote
Mormon-baiter John H. Beadle, claiming the specter had "often been seen and described by Indians and Mormons, but never by white Christians."
