China’s first aircraft carrier, built with the hull of an unfinished Soviet-era ship, was handed over to the navy and formally commissioned this morning, the defense ministry said.


China Navy’s First Aircraft Carrier Launched


The 65,000-ton vessel, named the Liaoning, enters operation after months of sea trials amid a dispute with Japan over islands claimed by both sides.

The carrier will enhance China’s warfighting and defense capabilities and “promote international peace and common development,” China’s Defense Ministry said in a statement on its website today. China has the world’s second-largest defense budget after the U.S. ...


They have a carrier now. It's official as of today.

Funny ramp on the bow but got to love "promote international peace"...WTF!

I used to see the white dove as the symbol of peace but now between the US, UN and China etc. it's military symbolism....do they think we are stupid? Most probably.

The chineese do not have planes and trained pilots to make it usefull...it will be used as a trainee ship for the first few years...

No threat there....for now.

OK they finally have 1 (one) and its 2012. When did we launch our first USA carrier? How many do we have? haha. They have about 50 years of catching up to do and by then aircraft carriers could be obsolete. No worries here.
