Russia suspends GMO corn imports

Russia's consumer rights watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said Tuesday it has suspended the import and use of genetically modified corn made by Monsanto Co. (MON) following a study's allegations that the crop causes cancer.

Rospotrebnadzor said the country's Institute of Nutrition has been asked to assess the validity of the study, while the European Commission's Directorate General for Health & Consumers has also been contacted to explain the European Union's position.

Following the study that alleges direct ties between genetically modified corn and cancer, Russia has announced it will no longer import any GMO corn.

Another nail in the proverbial coffin for Monsanto. Finally this poisonous concoction being disseminated throughout the world and forced upon people may stop, well at least in Russia anyways.

I think more nations should follow suit and disband this multinational corporation, and end it's hazardous march toward eliminating natural and native species, let alone the effects it has on humans.

First it was the USaid offices now its the GMO corn imports
people know dont want stuff bad for the health anymore
why importing when you can grow it good food yourself .. its time people become selfsufficiant

I was after the economic impact of the suspension (how much it will subtract to US exports). Your NASDAQ link seems broken. Another point of interest is where is Russia going to alternatively obtain the grain...

Well, that's good. With the drought we haven't got any excess corn anyway. Soon the United States will be the only country allowing GM foods. We have a country that does not seem to care for the health of the citizens. The management is more interested in keeping their own lavish lifestyle secure.

I think if people just keep getting the information out there, eventually people here will sit up and take notice.

Vote with your pocketbook, people. And keep hammering at the awareness of those around you. We'll hit a tipping point!

I would expect more countries can grow their own corn without much trouble. US produced corn is cheap because of subsidies to the farmers and I expect it is just another angle played to get other countries dependent on US aid and food products.

Here in Mexico, the birthplace of maize corn, much of ours is bought from the US because they can sell it to us cheaper than we can grow it, thanks to US taxpayers footing the subsidies. We can purchase tortillas from the supermarkets here, machine-made and likely from US GMO corn, for about half the price of those that are hand-made and being cooked on a comal as you walk up to the neighborhood shops that are located about every three blocks everywhere in the country. Most of us would rather spend the extra pesos for these extra-good, extra-fresh hand-made tortillas and only buy the cheap store-made kind just when shopping there and it is convenient - which is seldom. In recent months though, after reading a number of newspaper articles, I have been cautioning my neighbors about Walmart tortillas being made from franken-corn. Most of them say they won't buy that kind anyway.

Good going, Russia. I hope Mexico tells Monsanto adios as well.
