I have to sleep with the TV or radio on. I always try to tune into sometime "mellow".

I don't sleep so good and it seems to help with my, ummm... bad dreams.

So to answer your question, yes. The noise keeps the nightmares away.

Mostly.

I can't stand sleeping with the tv on, I have very vivid and wild dreams,

if the tv is left on, I dream infomercials and wake up exhausted.

Once my sis left the new Sherlock Holmes movie on, (the one with Robert Downey Jr)...the music from the DVD menu sounds like the scene from Wizard of Oz when the wicked witch was riding the bike....

I dreamed the wicked witch was on my heels with that dang bike for 8hrs straight....when I woke up I felt like a marathon runner.

From my experience....the tv ruins sleep.

Interesting thread.

I always wonder if people realise that TV networks purposefully play infomercials at night because of people that sleep with the television on.

Subliminal advertising to influence the masses.

Yah, but how many people pick up the phone and read their credit card numbers in their sleep? I thought that is when the lonely exes with all those bon bons and fat credit cards are awake to sell stuff too?

In any case OP, I always sleep to the infomercials. Well not really... what I do is turn on a show to drown out the freeway noise and I wake up frustrated because no matter how hard I try I just can't seem to stop vacuuming.

When I focus, there it is; an Orotech infomercial sucking out my brains.

I try to fall a sleep to Netflix on my PS3 as opposed to those horrible late night "info"mercials. Some of them are kind of funny though.

I'm one of those people that needs a little background static to get to sleep. Otherwise my mind keeps multi-tasking on what I need to get done the next day.

I'm the same way. The T.V. is my minds diversion away from what needs to be done the next day. I've never noticed a difference in dreams though with the T.V. on or off. The difference comes when I'm either really tired or not. If I'm shot, just REALLY tired, I'm not going to remember my dreams. I call that a hard sleep. When you wake up and the bed still looks pretty much the same as when you fell asleep. When I'm not that tired and I moved around a lot, I'm more apt to remember my dreams. And more times than not, those dreams are a variation of what's playing on T.V. at the time.

Ive tryed both with and without the TV on and Ive noticed if i leave the TV running i get woken up by bright flashes on screen and i think the TV constantly stimulates the brain while in use..
I prefer the room to be somewhat dark allowing a little light to sneak in this lets my eyes rest and my brain to wind down..
Images and light from the screen i would think send it to the brain, forcing it to work and translate the incoming information.(mind over matter) is what i call it..peace,sugarcookie1

I turned the TV off last night, I do not remember my dreams.

But, I did wake up 3 times over the course of the night.

My partner had a bad habit of leaving the T.V on when she slept and when we first got together very very distracting I used to have the weirdest dreams and wake up exhausted but now a couple of years on I convinced her that she would sleep better without it on and low and behold we have a better nights sleep. You need to unwind before bed and television is a stimulant, so it only makes sense that it would stimulate your sleep as such.

When I'm alone I sleep with the television off, preferring to nod off reading a book. But when my husband is in town he cannot fall asleep without the television on so I must soldier through.

It takes longer for me to fall asleep with the TV on, while it has the opposite effect on the husband. If I try to turn it off once he's snoring away he will immediately wake up and turn it back on.

Television doesn't seem to affect my dreams in any way- always vivid, in color, and non-related to whatever is on the tube. However I awaken frequently when the TV is on; I sleep through the night without it.

True story: On a recent business trip to Asia, I fell asleep with to BBC news programming. Hours later, I awoke to the same channel -- but it was showing Asian adult programming. My eyes!

I highly recommend falling asleep to a good book, if you need something to calm your mind. Another thing that I do sometimes is to make up stories in my head as I fall asleep or replay a favorite movie in my mind. I know that sounds weird and maybe hokey, but believe me, it beats Asian...er...performance art.

Well I kind of sleep with it on but I usually put a 30-45 min sleep timer on it.

I have the TV set to turn off after I know I'll be sleeping and to turn on just after the alarm rings (yes, I have to replace "damaged" alarm clocks often).

I set the TV to documentaries (or a recorded one); mostly of the Ancient Alien/Through the Wormhole ilk because of the consistent volume of the shows.

Last night the power went out before the TV's "off" time. I had the same horrible nightmare throughout the night and woke exhausted today.

Perhaps its sheer habit, but if I want to wake up rested, I find I must fall asleep with the TV on.

I sleep with a fan on for white noise, have very vivid dreams and usually remember them.

But. I almost always wake up feeling sore and have a body ache no matter what I do...

Having the TV on would bug me out! Although I have fallen asleep with it on I always shut it off, as it is brain rot anyway.

I too sleep most every night with the TV on, volume down to just barely a whisper. I have noticed the flashes of light on the screen have a tendency to wake me up.

About a year ago I bought a Zeo. Its one of the sleep analyzers that you wear to bed and it monitors your brain activity. I did a little experiment to see how having the TV on affects my sleep patterns. To cut to the chase, what I learned was that; 1) I feel asleep faster without the TV on, 2) I woke up less frequently with the TV off than on, 3) I went into deeper sleep and stayed there longer with the TV off, 4) I do NOT remember my dreams when I have the TV on.

According to the brain monitor, on nights where I had the TV on my sleeps cycles were quick and constantly changing. Conversely, on nights where I had left the TV off, my sleep cycle patterns had stabilized and were longer and more consistent.

The cycles with the TV on were all over the place, bouncing from one type to another every 10-15 minutes and not really ever settling down. When off, they were slow and steady like my brain was taking a big "gulp" of sleep and then coming back once or twice more to take a little sip and "top off the tank."

Since my sleep was erratic with the TV on, I never got a chance to really get into REM and get some dreams rolling. With it off, I was able to get into deep sleep and have some dreamin'.

This was backed up by the data I was able to collect on myself.

I also sleep with a fan on to generate a little white background noise.

That said, I still go to sleep with the TV on. I like it. I live alone and it keeps me company.

The sleep timer on most TVs nowadays is a wonderful thing.

I usually flip it on the Western Channel and go to sleep. IDK why, I guess it takes me back to a better time.

You're probably getting in a deeper level of sleep without it. Dreams are important for the sub conscience to sort out whats really on your mind.

My mother does this then complains she doesn't get good rest. Go figure.

My husband and I sleep with the tv on but I will dream about what is on the channel at the time. So if there is an infomercial on for the new Shark Vac. I tend to have dreams about cleaning and if the movie is Indiana Jones I might be dreaming of some kind of adventure.

I cannot get to sleep without the television on or I get the feeling of spinning. Almost like I am really unwinding from the day. An odd feeling to say the least.

You are speaking my language here....I REFUSE to sleep with the TV on or with one within ear shot...because Mr. Sham Wow somehow gets into my dreams and causes all kinds of nonsense in what would probably otherwise be a really nice dream...

My wife cannot sleep without the TV on most times...she grew up falling asleep to a tv on and still to this day can't rid herself of that comfort.

Needless to say we go to bed at different times. But yea infomercials are put there for a reason and its to wake up with the sudden urge to buy a "Slap Chop" or some "Oxyclean"...
