Fireball Meteor Ufo Hampshire 13.08.12

Before you start reading you should know there is NO video and NO pictures to accompany my story, but iv tried to help with a few maps and diagrams, im not here to misguide or trick people, i just want a better idea of what i saw.

On Sunday night / monday morning 12/13.08.12 1:44am me and a few friends where out on 'Butser hill' which is part of 'Queen Elizabeth country park' located in 'hampshire' southern uk around 12/15miles north of 'portsmouth' iv marked the area in the 'red box' to help with orrientation



we where parked at a intersection marked with the arrow



The top of butser hill is marked with an 'A'

we where out with the intention of watching the perseids meteor shower, unfortunatelly it was quite a cloudy night so our meteor count was pretty low, disheartened we talked about heading home, and my friend started to load the car and climbed in the back seat, before setting off i wanted to have one last scan of the sky, i just caught site of the moon as it dissapeared behind some clouds, then something caught my eye, behind the same body of cloud slightly to the right i could see an intence white glow.....

for reference i have created the following image with the letters 'A to E' this is the same intersection and iv tried to recreate the angle as best i can......



So i saw an intence white glow in the portion of the sky marked 'A' at first i thought it could be venus, but as i looked longer i could see it was getting brighter, i called my friend, he didnt quite get the urgency at first so slowly got out the car.

As i carried on watching it started to glow 'orange' 'B' at this point i realised it was a 'Fireball meteor' it was almost coming directly towards our position, my friend then joined me at this point, the glow became very intence and was reflecting off the clouds, as it came closer we could see the object at the front smoldering where it was moving so slow (not vapourising) like in faster meteors.

after the object slowed down to a certian speed the smoldering stopped and the object (just glowing) carried on the same trajectory 'C' (there are multiply dots on the image to represent the single objects path) slowly getting duller and duller (as the object cooled i assume) until finally it disapeared....

ok, all normal up till this point, what happen next is what really blew me away, a split second after the object dissapeared on the same trajectory there was a flash (strobe) of red and white and the object lit up and almost instantaneously changed direction and started heading north at a fast pace 'D' all the time the object was strobing red and white in short bursts, it flew around 'E' and looked like it was circling trying to locate somewhere to land, then eventually dropped out of sight. This was no aircraft, it was moving to fast the strobing lights where like no aircraft lights iv ever seen and it was circling at a pace greater than any conventional aircraft (that we know about)......

There is quite alot of army land, north of 'southdowns national park' and one RAF airbase that i know of 'Odiham'

did anyone else witness this, perhaps from a different angle?

a friend of mine in hampshire saw 2 orange orbs the other day, i doubt it's related but hampshire seems to be a hotspot at the moment. he got video of it too, but i don't know how to upload video onto ATS from my computer... even so i'm sure most would say they're chinese lanterns lol!

Ive seen one once a while back (Ontario, Canada) when i was a young teenager, thought the world was going to end (like the dinosaurs) lol.

You are very fortunate to have seen this! Not alot of people get to experience this cool and natural phenomena

There are quite an abundance of lanterns in the sky this summer along the south coast, you can see them most weekends, one night i sat watching a few university students trying to get them going, i think they where a little drunk as it was fun to watch

It was a very nice expierience, i was frozen and just stood there in awe, i remember thinking while it was burning "should i be preparing for a movie like scene driving with a huge explosion looming in the rear view mirror....

my friend thought the exact same thing, if it had fallen to earth i think it could have ruined someones day...

Did the object have a fiery tail at some moment? When it stopped "smoldering"...besides a "glow", did the object still look fiery to you --- as in fiery flames surrounding the object, but with possibly ---- no fiery tail?

No, there was no fiery tail after the initial fireball, it lit up at point 'D' and started flashing very fast (strobing) in a pulse like fashion it would strobe white one side then red the other, then split second pause then strobe red on the side it initially strobed white, and white where it initially strobed red, and continiued to do this the entire time it was in flight.....

after, me and my friend where trying to rationalise what we had seen, even thinking it could be gas pockets in the meteor exploding making it spin, but tbh it travelled to far and looked to uniform to be natural...

about 2 or 3 days ago, I was looking at the moon with a pair of binoculars. It was such a clear night, the moon looked great, it was a sort of cresent moon, with the lower bit lit about north east, from where I was stood.

Venus was really close to the moon too, and really bright, the sky looked great. I saw a plane come out of the glow of the moon, ( roughly same direction I assume) we get loads of planes flying over the house, its under the corridors that they use. ( south to north and north to south mostly.)

There was something slightly off about this plane, it had a very slight yellow tinge to it, it didn't look abnormal, just not the same as I'm used to seeing. It continued to fly sort of towards me, then kind of turned north, north west. As I looked at it with the binoculars, it sort of had a goldy glow, plane headlight I assumed, then as it got more towards me, I could make out the red and white flashing lights as it started flying away from me. 2 or 3 lights, close cluster, looked perfectly normal.

Then for a split second, there were about 10 to 20 red and white flashes, same as the others, looked, but they really jumped about in a random pattern and sort of formed an edge around a rhombus shape that was seriously huge in the darkness. The original lights were still flashing as they were before on the bottom left point of the rhombus. It took me by suprise and made my jaw drop. Then a few seconds later, it did it again.

I followed it with my binoculars as it headed off to the north east for as far as I could before it dissaperaed behind the houses / trees etc. It didn't do the crazy flash again though.

I was baffled and logically concluded, that either my bioculars wobbled about and my brain made it into a patern or something, or, there was a formaton of multiple planes flying without lights on with the plane, then flicked them on for a second. That's what I rationally came up with. But as I perceived it, it really did look like an enourmous, dark rhombus shape, with crazy strobing red and white lights around the perimeter, that I saw flash in random patterns twice. When I say enourmous, I mean big, very big. easily 50 to 100 times bigger than a plane and I'd say that was conservative. I watched a few planes go over afterwards, so had a good sense of scale. I did hear a plane at the time, not sure if it was the one I was watching, or another one close by, as I say, we get them flying over all the time. 4 or 5 in the sky at once is very common. There certainly wasn't any more than one plane that I could hear though.

I'm about 5 miles south of Butser too !! I wasn't sure at the time, if it was my mind playing tricks on me, but your description sounded very similar. Very odd indeed.
