Why / Where Did I Receive Applause?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I could not easily find the info, and I hope someone could just give me a quick heads-up on the matter.

When looking at my profile today, I noticed for the first time that I had "applause." Immediately (of course) I wondered who gave it to me, when, and why. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think we can ever see the "who" part of that, but I am wondering if there is some way to find out which thread/post you received applause for.

You should have gotten a private message ( U2U ) telling you which member of staff applauded you and for what post or thread.

You will get a message in your inbox that will tell you which moderator gave you applause and for which thread. Mods can do this if they find your posts to be exceptional.

When a person gets applause on ATS; it is always from a staff person; and you get a message in your inbox informing you of who gave you the applause and what reply and/or thread it was for.

I got an applause once for something which i consider very run of the mill here on ats. I suspect its very much up to the moderator to select their own criteria for those they feel worthy of an applause.

It is totally up to the moderator to applaud a post or not to. I, personally, will applaud a variety of things. If a member obviously puts a lot of work into a post or OP, if the post teaches me something, makes me laugh, proves a point, strongly supports or definitively debunks an OP, if the post shares difficult personal stories, is exceptionally creative, or if it makes me smile... All these things could illicit an applause from me.

Not all moderators follow the same guidelines or policy.

Lets just say Heff, it made him smile, it made him happy.

So can we assume that every post is read by at least one mod?
Sorry if that is a dumb question, I'm new.

No. Every post is not read by mods. We have a staff that, at full capacity, is about seventy people. And not all of them are active at any given time due to real life issues. There have been over 200,000 posts in the past 30 days. Even at full capacity... Well, that's a really high number. And since we're an all volunteer staff who are also proud of being contributing members as well, we really have to rely upon members to help us keep an eye out. The members utilizing the alert and complain features is a Godsend for us and we are always thankful that our members care enough to let us know when things aren't kosher and in bounds of the rules.

I get that members can alert staff if someone post something offensive or otherwise breaks the rules but
is there a similar function to alert mods of positive or valuable post?

The complaint button works perfectly for that. Just use complain and include the URL of the post you wish to bring t to the attention of the staff. The complain feature lets you enter text - so you can just say "This is not a complaint - I think this post deserves some positive reinforcement" and the entire staff will be able to see that message, from you, and check the post out.

This actually happens often - but in my opinion I wish it would happen more often!

Don't forget that you can contact that member and let them know that it was a particularly good post, too. That's one of the reasons we have the PM feature.

We'd rather you didn't send "that post sucks" messages, as that can lead to unpleasant things...but "thumbs up" messages are usually well received by everyone.

I know applause are a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but they do give you a little boost sometimes and make you feel good

They also make you want to be a better poster. You know that someone has taken notice and it makes you want to get more, just a good positive reinforcement tool. You know that if you really think things out and put effort into a discussion that it can affect people and their opinions. The applause are a way of showing that you affected someone, just as stars and flags are. We all have something to teach and we all have something to learn.

...of course, I get lots of applause just because I'm so darn good looking!

Well poop! I have two applauses and have no idea where they came from. I guess I may have deleted the u2u's inadvertently. That sucks because I really don't feel like a very applaudish worthy member. More like an advanced lurker.
Is there anyway to know what post it was for? Thanks.

Sorry. Such things are beyond my sphere of influence.

An admin might be able to find out though. If it's important to you, it couldn't hurt to send one a U2U and ask.

The reason why u don't get a lot of "non-complaint" complaint button pushes is because a lot of people don't think to use that button for that feature. Add another button or change the complaint button to maybe a "FeedBack" button. I'm sure the positive reviews would surge exponentionentially.
