One person has been killed and another injured after a man opened fire at a speech by the leader of the winning party in provincial elections in Quebec, Canada.

The 62-year-old man entered the Metropolis theatre in Montreal as Pauline Marois, the leader of Parti Quebecois (PQ), which campaigns for the region's independence, was addressing supporters.

RDI television showed pictures of police officers subduing a large man with a rifle who was apparently wearing a bath robe over black clothes.

When I saw the headline I actually thought - I wonder what the republican gun nuts will say if its one of their rallies... Then I thought .... hang on this is Canadian folks shooting each other, not U.S. - "The English are waking up!" I know I think I need that second cup of coffee about now.

I don't think stronger gun laws would have stopped this, to be honest. A nutter will get a gun if he wants/needs one whether they're legal or not. I doubt many (premeditated) firearms crimes are carried out with legally acquired weapons.
