First off, the very term "rest in peace" implies a belief in an afterlife....i.e -theists assume (with zero evidence, obviously) that the dead retain their consciousness in the afterlife. So it makes sense when theists hope for their dead to "rest" in "peace"..... as in, peace in the afterlife.

I thought atheists believed that when a person dies, they just cease to exist.... no afterlife...no heaven/hell...nothing. So why would an atheist hope their dead "rests in peace". And "rest in peace" where?

Well, that's not true. Most atheists grieve over loss the same as most theists do -- we're all human, regardless of what beliefs we might hold, and grief is a human emotion.

Well yes... we all feel grief. But Im not talking about grief here.
But not all of us look at a dead relative and think "he is in a different place now".
We believe our dead continue to exist somewhere else, dont we?

Yes, there are differing views out there, but they don't necessarily result in people not mourning. Your implication there is that if someone doesn't believe in the afterlife, when someone they love dies, they just shrug their shoulders and toss their feelings on the rubbish pile, and I don't think that's a reasonable claim.

A person would likely need to be sociopathic to have such a reaction to death of a loved one, which would have nothing to do with their beliefs.

Mourning takes place out of grief among both theists and non-theists.

However, only theists mourn while hoping that the loved one is in a better place. I've never heard of a theist who does not believe that the soul or spirit continues to exist after the bodys physical death... have you?

A lot of Jews don't believe in the afterlife -- heck, there's even an example in the New Testament, the Sadducees.
