Voter Supression In Canada Alive & Well -- Quebec Election.

Today is the start of the provincial election in Quebec. I have many, many friends in the province and they have all been complaining today of something VERY serious.

Being given the run around, for their voting. One particular friend of mine has been sent to 4 different voting places in the city, only to be turned away. Him and others like him, young, english and student voters are being led on a goose chase in order to be able to cast ballots in this election.

I'd like to ask any of my French Canadian brethren to speak up if you've noticed anything strange about these elections today and the tacts being used, that seem to want to keep some people for casting their vote.

Tenth, thank you for posting. I was going to make a thread, but figured someone could be the issues together more succinctly then myself.

I to have heard a flood of out rages coming from Quebec about the election. Is this Pierre Poutine and the auto dialer scandal with the federal election revisited?

Also news regarding the gunman has been quickly hushed up and nothing seems to be hitting MSM. The whole situations is strange if you ask me.

With the election of a separatist party i just hope Canada stays united and the PQ's term in office ends like the previous ones that came before. Dont misunderstand, i hope they try to better the province in the ways that appealed to their constituents, but i sincerely hope that the separatist ideals are shot down immediately.

I would suggest that he was referring to the polls that said he would end up a distant 3'rd...which he didn't. But yes, Quebec's politics are famously corrupt and have been for a long time.

Still...my Canada includes Quebec. (Mind you, it includes Florida, too )

I think this is a good thread to continue the debate on the results and issues surrounding the Quebec election.

I just pulled this morning of the Gazette and found info on the shooter.

Television footage showed a heavy-set man in a blue bathrobe and black balaclava yelling: “the anglos are waking up” in French with an English accent as he was led away by police. Then alternating between English and French he added: “There’s going to be f----ing payback. It’s enough. Wanna make trouble.”

Oh no, anglophone was the shooter, i hope this not give more support behind the PQ and in a blue bath robe to boot....

I hope this does not increase the disconnect between the anglophones and francophones.

French Canadian here. Nothing out of the ordinary yesterday. Same old, same old...

Having a woman as a Premier is a first here in Quebec. Does warrant congratulations.

A Parti Quebecois minority ensures that they won't be trying for a referendum (which they would lose) and chances are that we will be going back to the poll booths within the next two years.

I haven't seen voter suppression here where I live. Does not necessarily mean it didn't happen elsewhere.

I doubt this is as per usual and i worry about the negative reprocussions as a result of this.

Hi everyone.

Thank you for your replies. From what I can gather my friends are all young students who are mostly only english speaking.

I've spent a lot of time in Montreal and I know there is tension between english and french speaking folk, especially in this election.

The PQ win puts things into a different perspective. I wonder if the issue of soverignity will dominate the platform or not.

I heard this morning - over the radio - that the suspect is hospitalized after having heart failures. There is no doubt that this individual has issues (which wouldn't change much of anything whether he had been French or English) but yes, it might flame up some passions. Let's hope not. Never know though...

The division between us French and English folks here is bad enough as it is.

Not all of us French Canadians living in Quebec are Separatists. I live in one of the greatest countries in the world and that country is Canada, from coast to coast. And we are many, thinking this way.

Since the PQ is in a minority position, there won't be a lot of tensions. Before the shooting last night, PM Pauline Marois spoke in English to the Anglos, reassuring them that they would not be losing any rights.

As for your friends having trouble voting, it probably had to be some technicality. The government in power (in this case the Liberals) supervise the proceedings. Since your friends are anglos, it is automatically assumed they will vote liberal, therefore, the Liberals would not purposefully keep them from voting. I would think this probably has to do with the new regulations regarding students being alowed to vote outside of their riding. Do you know if they were voting outside their riding?

They were sent to several different ridings and polling stations, some were not even able to vote because of the wild goose chase they were sent on.

Now mind you it's only a dozen or so incidents that I am 1st party witness to. The rest is hearsay and I'm sure some of it was not having proper ID or something of that nature.

I live in Ontario and visit Montreal frequently for hockey games. I love the province and people. I speak french, but I am usually told just to speak english cause i am yet to gain complete fluency

I agree with you about enjoying our country from Coast to Coast. I am not opposed to any political party fulfilling the wishes of their supporters, but seperation still does not appear to be a constant theme in peoples minds.

Personally, I don't think a vote for the PQ can be equated to a vote for separation. Last figure I read stated that 70% of Quebecois were not even interested in a referendum on the subject. The Liberals were sent packing, IMHO, because of the mishandling of the student strikes, a disgust with the everyday corruption, and a general dissatisfaction with the status quo. All good reasons to shake up a moribund government.

To the OP's question, everything went fine in my region. I live in the National Capital Region, where there is a lot of anglos and everything went smoothly.

Just a side note :
As Johnny Canuck eloquently said, a vote for the PQ is not necessarily a vote for separatism.
Sometimes, the Quebecois will vote for the PQ usually to get rid of what is actually in place.
And in this case, obviously the Quebecois just wanted to get rid of that douche Charest. Good riddance.

As for the shooting, regardless of the language of the shooter, this is unacceptable.
We live in a free democracy, violence is not the solution.

I personally do not think that this action will polarize anglos vs. french.
Only the weak minded will find a reason for retribution.
