I used to do work for SCDC (South Carolina Department of Corrections) on their electronic systems (cameras and fence alarms)

Inmates with kitchen knives: not unusual. Who do you think does the food? Staff is in charge, inmates do the cooking. All kitchen ware has to be accounted for before they can leave the kitchen.

Camera: inmates learn not to mess with them. Take one out, and a first respond team goes in to the cell (or area where the camera is), in riot gear, and force the inmates on the floor, cuff them, escort them out, and replace the camera. Repeat offense get's you sent to SMU (Special Management Unit) aka "Lock Up" where you locked down in an even smaller cell, loose good time, etc.

Fence: doesn't need to be sturdy. That's razor wire on top, not barb wire. Razor wire is much, much worse, I've been cut with it and it slices you open, right through your clothes. The fence itself is alarmed. Part way up is a conduit of wire that is special. The wire reacts to vibrations on the chain length fence (IE someone trying to climb or cut through). There are several boxes located all long the fence, representing sections. Vibrate the fence and the alarms go off back at control, who then radio the rover (usually 1 or 2 guards armed with shot guns in a pick up truck, who drive around the facility's outer area), who quickly drives to the area the alarm went off.

Can inmates still escape? Sure, all though it is a lot harder in today's world than it used to be. Most places have what we call "Controlled Movement", meaning the inmates are normally kept locked down in their cell blocks except for certain times (meal times, or rec time out in the yard). And of course in today's world it can be very hard to stay out once you've escaped.

Impossible? No. Very hard to do? Yes.

he should never be released however in 21 years he will either have an "accident" in prison or someone/s will knock him off the moment he gets parole.

Every society has the right to determine how laws are to be regulated, and non-citizens have no right to change those laws, although they do have the right to critized, to discuss, debate and find solutions for a better world, as we are only all one race - the human race with common values.

Norway had decided for itself and every fellow human brother and sister should respect that decision.

Utimately, the purpose of serving justice upon that mass murderer is NOT to bring back the dead, for nothing mortal can, nor does it aim to end murder of humans in society, for at the basic level, we are still emotional beings and a few still exist whom cannot control their emotions, or stupid irrationality, even in this modern educated world.

However, the aim was to prevent MORE deaths from this HumanSlayer, by putting him behind bars, that would ensure he can NEVER ever get out to kill more, for he had disgustingly shown absolutely no remorse for his hideous deeds, and even smile when the sentence was given.

On that issue, Norway society had seen justice served. None can argue on that point.

HOWEVER, there arise the issue of his imprisonment.

Norway prisons are the Hilton Hotels of all prisons on Earth, where prisoners are humanely treated in everyway - food, recreational activities, visits, spaces, medical treatment, complaints officers, etc.

For his gory deeds of slaughtering 77 innocent humans and maiming many more, under the Norway prison, he gets a spacious apartment with the works, access to books and inmates and even visitations, no need to worry about not having a job to pay for everything for the rest of his life. No wonder he smiled.

Does this seem fair, to the dead and to those hurt in many ways by this mass murderer, suffering in life? What had this Norway luxury prison sentence done for him?

Norway's prison system was meant to rehabilitate prisoners, so that they may return to contribute to society. But why give this mass murderer, WHO HAD SHOWN NO REMORSE, that benevolent system? Robbers, thieves, corrupted crooks, second degree murderers, etc do deserve rehabilitation, to be given a second chance. But for this unremorseful mass murderer ?

He should be locked up in small room with wash basin and toilet bowl, kept to himself and made to face the ghosts of those who he had murdered, to face up and answer for what he had done - taking away the precious gift of life of others, time to dwell on it for the remainder of his life, and devoid of all contact with humankind.

whole heartedly agree with every thing you have outlined,why should he get to live a good life with private gym and many other perks, not a punishment to my way of thinking.I say lock him in a cell no tv or interaction with anyone.Although no punishment would ever bring justice for all those deaths or their families.

They've built a special place for him, keeping him isolated from other prisoners! He will be killed the first couple of days if he gets to socialize with other prisoners! I'll remember they talked to some other inmates, and, boy, they have no love for the guy! They'll take him out when they have the chance!

In my opinion he should have got lifetime for every person he killed. Which would be 77 x 21 = 1617 years. Just in case this sucker should live long enough to see the outside of his cell. And not a luxury cell with bed, desk and windows where you get warm meals and fresh veggies.

More like a dark, wet hole infested with insects and rodents. Thats his food.
