Large fire ongoing at Heathrow Airport 21/8/12

Just seen a quick report on sky news that had pictures of a large fire with a lot of smoke on the perimeter of Heathrow airport London. The fire is ongoing now and being tackled by fire fighters apparently not affecting flights at the moment however the pictures they showed certainly looked like a major fire. I'm on an iPad and no idea how to link onto this page but if I can find one will attempt to post it here. There was no cause given for the fire and it's breaking news.

A4 Bath Road both ways closed, slow traffic due to smoke blowing across the road and serious fire at tyres in a field between A312 The Parkway (Jolly Waggoners Roundabout) and A30 Great South-West Road / Burns Way (Henleys Roundabout). A massive plume of smoke can be seen across West London. 40 firefighters are on scene. Heathrow says flights aren't affected at the moment.

Nice digging and it does look like a major blaze. I am supprised there is not more coverage on this story.

Tyres ,that will be why so much smoke then.

Yep, if anyone has ever seen a tyreson fire, you get very thick black smoke.

Will take some time to get them out too. Not an easy job.

Tyres dont get put out once theyre set - a trick to know when out in the woods in heavy rain . That'll be fierce fire till they are gone or any not burning moved away .
Could they be aircraft tyres

It says it's in a field..

I've seen farmers put tyres on the hay bails, which are also covered in black plastic and if you've ever seen any on a warm morning, the steam coming off them is quite significant so they do get warm and we've had some very warm weather over the weekend.. Maybe it is that? Just guessing..
